In contrast to the tune that ache thread, has anyone ever smiled after hearing a particular tune (or version of a tune). Heres a few that done it for me.
Grant's reel (by Finbarr Dwyer), The Funny Reel, Jackie Coleman's, Lord Ramsey and Kitty in the Lane (by Finbarr Dwyer). A few of Finbarr's version had some great dragged out notes (eg Sally Gardens).
Every time I hear the first three notes of "Tommy Coen's" (aka Christmas Eve). Also, the Jolly Tinker, the Longford Tinker (aka Spinster), Mulhaire's # 9, the Kilfenora Set (reels - Connemara Stockings, etc), hmmmm.....I smile a lot when I hear good music!
Tell Her I Am, because it's playing in the background of the Peter Sellars sketch, "Suddenly It's Folk Song", when he's ripping the p*ss out of Irish ceilidh bands. I must add, the Scots and the English get comparable treatment in their turn.
The Hens' March To The Midden; Mulvihill's Hornpipe (I think -one on the Molloy/Peoples/Brady album); and a ridiculous little reel called The Green Gates. All chirpy tunes just about on the right side of naff.
Nicholas - have you heard the Popes (Shane MacGowan's band after he left the Pogues) version of The Hills Of Connemara? It finishes with the best rendition of The Green Gates I've ever heard. I keep trying to emulate it, but failing miserably.
Oh also The Road to Buggleskelly by John Skelton. I added this tune to the requests section so if anyone knows it could they post it please. It is a great tune - first part in A, second in C (although on the album he plays it in Bb and Db)
Rolling in the Ryegrass, done well, has such a charm and simple grace to it I can't help but smile.
Miss Monaghan's is much the same.
And I've got this recording Mick o'Brien and Caoimhin o'Raghallagh playing Woman of the House, live, with such passion and backbeat emphasis that it's absolutely breathtaking. Brings a smile to me heart : )

Thanks Slainte. That's a lovely setting for the Galway Rambler played by Kitty and Eoin.
For me I'd say Devanney's Goat which is a great melody but also has a sense of fun about it.
