And I'd been thinking it was Kilburn. It was time they went off and got gentrified, but Papua New Guinea's taking it a little far, even today. It might be easier to get eaten than to get Broadband.
What is it about imperial powers and the lack of creativity when it comes to naming colonies? "New Ireland", "Neumecklenburg", "New England"...etc. They had one shot and you'd think they'd of had a little fun with it, or am I the only guy who would have named his colony Frunobulax?
Danny, i'm glad you responded. I was thinking you'd be a fine candidate to make a little visit to New Ireland, given all your belly achin' about there never being any brand spankin' "new" discussions or topics here at The Session
In the 80s I was on a series of archaeological digs in Shetland, as I keep saying on threads to do with Shetland. One was a summer job for a few weeks. A girl about to go on that dig told an acquaintance where she was going. The latter said something like, "But it will take you that long to get there, won't it?" She thought the Shetland Islands were somewhere in the South Atlantic, like the Falkland Islands.

Anybody ever been there? Isn't that where they brew New Guinness? And play a wicked version of Pidgin on the Gate...

But. The burning question is of course, is it part of the New British Isles?

Re: New Ireland
I think there's a New Caledonia out there as well.
Do Scottish people have an unconditional right of residence there?

Frunobulax
No doubt there'd craic in Frunobulax 24/7. I'll take a time share.

Yeah, Disney World would be the perfect venue for a 'Mickey Mouse' fleadh.
Regards,
Harry.

Re: New Ireland
With a name like that, Screet has to be in the New Shetlands - they exist, don't they?

Re: New Ireland
the South Shetlands are down in the Antarctic, not too far from the South Orkneys
as well as "New England" in USA, there is a region in Australia called "New England" .... in New South Wales!

So who is going to write a tune called the "Humours of Frunobulax" - it would have to be a winner.
