Heading to Boston

Heading to Boston

Hi all, This is my first time using the discussion link but I was looking for a bit of advice. I'm living in Ireland and myself and a friend are hoping to head to Boston for around three months just on a holiday visa. We are both trad musicians and were hoping to get some gigs (paid sessions rather than just joining one) in Irish bars to fund our "break from reality". Has anyone any advice on where might be good to check out or how to promote ourselves over there?

Re: Heading to Boston

Hi Sonny,

You're best bet might be to show up at a session once you get here. "Gigs" around here tend to be relatively few and far between, and are usually passed around by word of mouth among the local musicians, who kinow each other well.

"Know", not "kinow"... while I'm at it. ::sheesh...::

Re: Heading to Boston

Thanks James. I appreciate the advice. Seems a bit risky going over without alot of cash and no gigs lined up but we might just take the risk. Need to play music and go somewhere different. Thanks for the help. Good editing also!!

Re: Heading to Boston

My pleasure, Sonny. You'd be hard pressed to do better for music here in the States. The Boston session scene is tough to beat.

Re: Heading to Boston

Boston's a great session town. q great town in general. But i agree with Sonny: it might be a bit hard to get paying gigs. It would help if you made a few "connections" first. I'd try and help facilitate some, but my connections in boston are slim. Athough come to think of it, i do know one guy you should talk to. Drop me a line through this website and i'll give you his info.

Re: Heading to Boston

Ah hmm... If you're ever in the Back Bay area, you could always busk on Newbury St. during a baseball game! I've done that a few times and made a good amount. I treated myself to some tasty sushi and mochi [Red Bean's pretttttty damn good.] afterwards. Mmmmm.

Cheers,
Armand
