Johnny Connolly melodeon

Johnny Connolly melodeon

There have been discussions about JC before, but ...

We had visitors from Australia last night who showed me a video on their digital camera that they took on one of Aran Islands last week, of a little pub ceili with just Johnny snr (I think, hard to see him among the dancers, does the younger one play same type of melodeon?) playing. What a powerful rhythm he gets out of that thing!

Looking at various websites, it seems he had a lot of hard work to do to adapt all the tunes he wanted to play to the one-rower but he really persevered because he felt you couldn't beat it for rhythm

Re: Johnny Connolly melodeon

Young Johnny (Johnny Óg Connolly) is also a great musician but I don't know if he plays the melodeon like his father. You can hear Johnny playing accordion on a great recording along with Brian McGrath called "Dreaming up the Tunes".

Re: Johnny Connolly melodeon

Ive been listening to alot of JC lately. Some of the ornaments he was, I suppose, forced to use due to the limitations of the instrument sound better and are more creative than what a two row box player would normally do. The albums an toileán aerach and an mileoidean scaoilte are fantastic. Im trying to find some more similar stuff if anyone has suggestions. Also, Brendan Begley plays along the same lines.
