Fleadh Cheoil na Breataine 2007, Preston- anyone fancy coming?

Fleadh Cheoil na Breataine 2007, Preston- anyone fancy coming?

Hey everyone!

I'm a member of the Preston branch of comhaltas and this year we're organising the All Britain Fleadh at UCLAN university in Preston city centre on the 30th June-1st July. There's going to be loads going on and if you can make it you should definitely come along for some or all of it.

The Fleadh is a set of competitions in Irish music run by Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann: http://comhaltas.ie/ and they are aimed at Irish musicians from all over England, Scotland and Wales. There will be competitions in solo instruments such as flute, whistle, fiddle and accordion, singing in English and Irish and also group competitions: grupai cheoil, ceili bands, duets and trios. The competitors for the All-Britain have already made it through their individual regional competitions and if they do well in these competitions they could well be off to the All-Ireland Fleadh this summer.

On the 30th June we have the first competitions (duets, trios, grupai cheoil and junior ceili bands) in the the afternoon. Then there will be a Fleadh Mass in the student's union on Fylde Road followed by the opening ceremony from 7:45-8/8:15pm. Access to the union is from the campus side as opposed to the road side.

CEILI-30th June
There will be a Ceili in the SU starting at 8pm til late and that's going to cost £5/£3. The band we have for the evening is a local band called the Castlemore Ceili band. This should hopefully be a good fun event particularly suitable for families and there's going to be a dance display by Mary Whelan's Irish Dancers which is one of the local Irish dance schools in Preston.

SESSIONS-30th June
*There will also be a session (unfortunately just for over 18s due to licensing) in The Source which is the union bar.
*A youth session run by Comhaltas na n'Og in the Green Olive (also in the union) starting at about 8:15pm.
*Over the road on North Road is a pub called The Unicorn. This is our local session pub and for Saturday night we've got the upstairs room. We're hosting a session up there from about 8pm til whenever we get chucked out. This is totally suitable for families with under 18s and we're going to have the bar open upstairs too. We're going to be passing a bucket round for that event. One quick note though- the stairs upto the room are quite narrow and steep so might not be suitable for those who have trouble with stairs. Sorry!
*Next door to the Unicorn is The Moorbrook. The landlord's very happy to welcome musicians and singers. There is a regular folk club there which is mostly songs, so this is likely to manifest itself as a singaround. Starting again at about 8pm.

1st June
Competitions will start again on Sunday morning over at the University buildings. We've got the Greenbank and Harrington buildings along with the cafeteria there for the day. These are mostly solo competitions along with the much anticipated Senior Ceili band competiiton at the end of the day. There is a charge to get in for competitions which you can pay on the door. You can pay for either Saturday or Sunday or for the weekend and we'll give you a wristband. The price is usually not much (circa £5/£6) but I'm not sure how much. Everyone with an interest in Irish music is welcome to come and watch the competitions which are usually of a very high quality.

There should also be some lunchtime sessions in The Unicorn on North Road as well which are of course suitable for families again.

Parking for Sunday can be found in specific university car parks near to the competition venues. There will be a small charge for the day.

For those of you worried about getting lost, there will be signs up directing you to the Fleadh.

Sooooo, I think that's everything. The website to check out is
http://www.prestoncomhaltas.org.uk/ or if you've got any questions just email me through this website, or carry on the discussion!

Hope to see you all there!

Looks like it will be a great weekend Róisín but as I've often said before in the immortal words of Ralph McTell, "It's a long long way from Clare to there" so unfortunately I won't be able to join you.

You seem to have a great thing going over there in the UK at present as I was just watching some stuff from the London scene on http://comhaltas.ie/music/detail/comhaltaslive_211_music_from_london_full_programme/. We don't, however, see much from the north but I'm sure a lot must be happening in Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester for example. Maybe if Willie Fogarty turns up at the Fleadh with his camera you might point him the direction of some good sessions that we might get to see on Comhaltaslive sometime.

Hey Scrappy

Try the tourist info number 01772 253731 to look for a BnB, it's probably the easiest way to find something nearby. I don't actually live in Preston meself, I'm based in Lytham St Annes which is down the road on the seafront and at the moment I'm in Leicester so I don't know where the best spots are. Sorry! But try that phone number or go to http://www.visitpreston.com/site/accommodation

Hope that helps!

The Moorbrook isn't only a Singaround pub. It depends on who is in on the night and what they choose to do. There's as much music as singing, so instrumentalists should not feel inhibited. Local Irish musicians will be in evidence.
