Why are we wasting our time arguing about stupid political things that don't matter anyway?

Why are we wasting our time arguing about stupid political things that don't matter anyway?

There are a wide range of peoples, traditions, cultures in the world. It's an amazing place.

Even more amazing for those of us who live in 'these islands' is the huge range and diversity of peoples, cultures, traditions, races, languages, customs, landscapes, ecosystems - even climates (take the phenomenal micro-climate and unique ecosystem of the Burren for example) within such a small space. (Or compare Birmingham's freezing cold winters and destructive tornadoes with the climate of Polzeath.)

I say, let's celebrate it, in a way befitting our talents and proclivities. Now what could we do?

Hmmm ...

Re: Why are we wasting our time arguing about stupid political things that don't matter anyway?

well I've got a leg in plaster and I'm on drugs, and the family has told me to stop plucking my instrument, so arguing about trivial crap is a great way to pass the time

Have a good natured, enjoyable debate like intelligent adults?

Regards,

Harry.

Re: Why are we wasting our time arguing about stupid political things that don't matter anyway?

let's get a huge response and make it a mass debate.
Come on folks, we can do it if we all pull together.

I *told* you you were getting too intelligent and sensible, Harry.

Are you aboslutely SURE they said "stop plucking about" Bren?

I'm sure they didn't ben, but even I wouldn't repeat it on here

Mind you, they complain about a little wee mandolin, I haven't the heart to tell them that I'm getting me dad's old concertina fixed

Dutifully pulling, Bren. To answer that question, I just about think that it's because not everyone plays a musical instrument! That 'late-'60s sage Cat Stevens once sang, "There'll be no war in the world/with everybody joining the band."

More seriously, one of the Internet's biggest charms for me is the chance to see what so many other people think! Conflict doesn't have to be an insulting or otherwise bad thing. What's important is that everyone gets a chance to explain their perspective. Internet forums can be great places for that. The world is full of people who are different from me, and I am greatly enriched by exchanges and observations of the world online.

Bren, my best wishes for a speedy and full recovery. If you get too desperately bored and longing for some mass debate/pointless bickering, let me know. I'll be happy to start another "session etiquette" thread.

Re: Why are we wasting our time arguing about stupid political things that don't matter anyway?

I'm not so worried about the 'plucking about', it's the mass debating that's getting me worried.

Why do you think he said "we can do it if we all pull together"?

:-P

Re: Why are we wasting our time arguing about stupid political things that don't matter anyway?

I was about to say 'Amen' to cutting the political argument, but saw cathrynb's post.

I would say I totally agree with Cat Stevens comment. However, since he is on the US list of unsavory foreign nationals due to his religious affiliation, such a sentiment could get me an all expenses, indefinite duration vacation to Guantanamo Bay.

Bren. Get well soon. Problem is, as I found with my accordion, if you pull out the concertina, you will suddenly have alot more privacy on your hands than you ever expected! :-)

Ben why did you waste your time posting this silly discussion, which is even more useless than mine?

Re: Why are we wasting our time arguing about stupid political things that don't matter anyway?

"Why are we wasting our time arguing about stupid political things that don't matter anyway?"

The real question here is if your arguments are correct in the first place.

First of all, did you mean that all political things are stupid and don't matter or that only stupid political things don't matter? If you meant the first I cannot agree with you, and if you meant the latter these *stupid* things may be stupid only from your perspective and actually do matter to someone, in the degree that they need to spend time to argue about them.

And how do you define "wasting time"? You need to use your time doing something, don't you? If these people have a free time gap to talk about this and that, then it really does't matter how they fill that time gap anyway and you can not say they are wasting their time.

Ehh, just adding my share to all the wasting of time talking stupid nonesense :-)

Re: Why are we wasting our time arguing about stupid political things that don't matter anyway?

Zip, it's okay to agree with Cat Stevens. It's agreeing with Yusuf Islam that will get you into trouble.

That's a bit harsh isn't it Danny?

Ah! I see. I forgot the smiley.

Re: Why are we wasting our time arguing about stupid political things that don't matter anyway?

Cat Stevens? The hate-monger (recently re-packaged as "benign" by media dim bulbs) who lustily ululated for Salman Rushdie's decapitation, simply over a religious spat? Him? Blech.

He did indeed add his voice to those calling for the writer's death DD, but I don't know about these lusty ululations (known as "randy yodels" in my neck of the woods).
Although "The Modern Revisionist Encyclopedia " aka "Wikipedia" has him claiming that he was misinterpreted.

I'm being followed by a Moonshadow ... (hate, kill)
Moonshadow, moonshadow ...

... and I remember him crediting himself as the author of the hymn "Morning has Broken" on one of his CDs ...

Re: Why are we wasting our time arguing about stupid political things that don't matter anyway?

There you go, Bren....

All I had to do was mention Cat Stevens, and off the discussion went. Was this trivial enough for you?

FWIW, I did buy his newish CD, An Other Cup. But shortly after that, I read an interview the NY Times did with him, and I decided I could not purchase anything more by him. Yes, some of his comments were extremely disturbing. It was very hard to see the composer of Peace Train refusing to agree that terrorist acts were inherently wrong.

Re: Why are we wasting our time arguing about stupid political things that don't matter anyway?

ok Ben, sorry. I used to hate smileys, thinking they were childish and sort of studenty-naff, but they really do have value. I must remember to use them more frequently also.

Re: Why are we wasting our time arguing about stupid political things that don't matter anyway?

When I posted my comment here ... and the final question ... I wondered if anyone would come up with the suggestion that we all go down the pub and play a few tunes.

I'm guessing that was too subtle an answer.

I find "going down the pub for a few tunes" to be deliberately offensive and insulting to those who are housebound with a feckin great stookie.

Get well soon Bren!
Use the down-time constructively. Learn new tunes from cds etc., whatever.

Having been unwillingly involved in that exercise, I would assure everyone that the current president's people don't make that distinction.
