I surch for a bouzouki tutorial. I play also giutar and mandolin.
Anyone out there used:
1. "The Irish Bouzouki" by Niall O'Callanain and Tommy Walsh
2. The Zan Mcleod ‘Learn to play the irish bouzouki’ DVD
3. The Gerry McKee CD-Rom?
and the diffrent between the books
I am from germany and is not possible to get one of this books here to do a look on this books. I also intrested in free lessons or free books in the internet, but I don't found any stuff.
The Zan McLeod DVD is very good if you come t terms with Zan's bouncing eyebrows - seriously though it is a good tutorial with some great playing on it. He plays in GDAD on it.
Jean Banwarth's site is great for tabs of tunes and all sorts and is really well put together in English and French (no German though): http://banwarth.free.fr/engbouz.htm

Another good book is one by John McGann called (I think) Octave Mandolin/Bouzouki. It's really more for OM, the tuning is almost exculively GDAE, but it's still a great book for melody playing or accompaniment, and there are e few accompaniment parts for GDAD. Hope some of these posts help you in your quest!
Gerry McKee's tutorial is great for a GDAE player, although he does not play GDAD himself, he does refer to it. Zan McLeod's is better for GDAD, it depends on your preferred tuning.
Keep your eyes open for this, looks interesting. I'm a member of the cittern yahoo group (something you might want to check in to... it includes all the double strung family instruments).

"The Irish Bouzouki" by Niall O'Callanain and Tommy Walsh is pretty much useless as a tutor, with little or no explantion and analysis of the playing styles of the musicians featured. The CD is good though and the book has tunes and chords so that's some use.
Gerry McKee's is good for getting started but is really about chord-based strumming with the odd bass run etc. It is GDAE but cones with GDAD chords and can be played with either.
Zan McCloud's is the best in my opinion. It concentrates on flatpicking styles (it has some strumming and covers - horror - syncopation!) and shows why GDAD works well with ITM. It has the tunes notated and TAB making it possible to have a good pike at what he's up to. All that and Billy McComisky on accordian - result!

I have one problem. It is not easy to get this tutorial in germany. I need a adress and it is possible to get this book by second hand?
Even Steven, eh? McGann's book is GREAT, but I had to buy two instruments so I could use both Zan McLeod's and John McGann's tutorials (I hate retuning). *moaning and groaning*

But please note that it is not a book - it is a DVD and you watch it on a DVD player. You might be able to get it 2nd hand but I don't know where.
