Thank's for the replies to my recent posts.
The one about polishing the flute actually refered to the outside, not the bore.
Should have made myself clear.
To save going back and finding it, I asked if anyone had ever polished up their flute to bring out the grain and character of the wood or is this something to avoid doing at all costs.
I think it's a matter of taste - do you want it to look gorgeous, a thing of beauty in its own right, or do you want it to look ancient, a proven warrior of smoky bars and decades of dark sessions?
The only problem would be carelessly polishing in such a way as to get gunge on the pads.
(Apropos of the inside, which I know is off-topic so I'll keep it in brackets, I once took delivery of a brand new *keyed* flute that included instructions to *pour* oil into the bore! Gadzooks, holy moley and good grief!)
(I *pour* oil into the bore, always have, after cling-wrapping the pads to avoid contact with the oil. I then leave it to drain off upright in it's seperate bits on a wooden wrack - then wipe out later. I then use some of the 'run-off' to coat the exterior of the flute to bring out it's grainy goodness, with the afore-mentioned cling wrap still protecting the keys. my flute's eight years old and better than ever!)
(But you are describing a clever method - there was no ingenuity in the notes I mentioned above. To be fair, they were slipped in by a dealer, and did not come from the maker.
[Spellpoop warning:] Isn't there a risk that it'll be ruined by draining it on a wrack? [Apology: spellpoop over]
)
([ Look moigt, I'm an Australian, write? it's my god-given-right to murder this bloody pommy-speak any way i can, i mean, it's only rite. yep, murdering things like the english language, and irish music, It's what we do best, ya bloody mongrel bludger!])
I thank you all....
