Re: THE MANDOLIN ~ Is it really innocent and blameless?
My bloody mandolin drives me mental. Frickin A strings are never the same. I reckon i need some new tuning pegs, other that that the mando is one of the greatest instruments ever.
"My grandfather was born in 1909 in a
small town in Tennessee ( later they
named the town after him ) . He is
a reknown fiddler, manolinist, a suave entertainer who performs every kind of
music form blues, jazz, swing, folk, hoe-
downs ,rag, gospel and a mixture of Spanish, German and some Hawaiian music."
See, I'm trying to uncover this insidious plot by these folks, mandolinists or manolinists, they are a spooky lot. I think they are part of an advance invasion force of an alien lizard like race. Look in the eyes of the next one you see, and check out those scales on their ears too while you're at it. Don't they look lizard like? Ooh, gives me the shivers, like handling raw liver.
"The Groovy Rednecks are a band originated in Los Angeles, California. They have been called many things, but have maintained their hold on being a county band for people who hate country. The Rednecks consist of Tex Troester the vocalist who could really use some vocal lessons, Bob Ricketts the guitarist who is talented beyond his means, Ron Botelho the bassist and only band member with a child, Gary Riley, a guitarist, manolinist, and squeeze-boxist, and Jim Doyle, the relative newbie to the band filling in after Herman _________ left, deciding to persue other genres. Being together since 1991, the Rednecks have played over 400 shows, being themselves the entire time. You usually see them play drunk or getting close to it, and like their song are a Drinkin' Band."
Re: THE MANDOLIN ~ Is it really innocent and blameless?
Many are the mandolins in the hands of conspirators who believe the instrument can somehow create a worm hole to the "other side" where music lives and thrives...
Unfortunately they don't realize how complicated tunes with two measley parts of "AA BB" can be... and maybe that's why they seek this worm hole... or are they conscious of the complexities?
Perhaps I am still one of them? But if I am, I haven't found the worm hole... but have found sleepless nights, carpal tunnel, tired limbs, broken strings, broken dreams... and every now and then a moment of musical magic. (Mandolin was my 3rd stringed instrument... I am Mando-Highlander)
Re: THE MANDOLIN ~ Is it really innocent and blameless?
The mandolin is for slow airs, backing tunees (strumming0 or songs, melody or harmony, and O'Carolan stuff. And I am not just saying that because that's all I can play.........
Re: THE MANDOLIN ~ Is it really innocent and blameless?
hey, I don't want to admit that I'm a mandolinista, but that link to Howard Armstrong, he was really great, got to meet him once, listen to him all day, wonderful man, incredible music. He definitely found the way through to the music. On the other hand, there's this woman who shows up at session and just whangs the thing...............
Re: THE MANDOLIN ~ Is it really innocent and blameless?
Oh, no, ceolachan! Now you've blown my cover! Don't you realize that there aren't even any mandolin jokes? All I've ever had to do to lie low was hide my banjo and innocently hold a mandolin.
Now I'm going to be regarded with suspicion ALL the time!
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrghhhhhhh
Re: THE MANDOLIN ~ Is it really innocent and blameless?
I know, I think I've heard jokes for every instrument going, but never a one about a mandolin or a "mandolinista"...
See, there's the proof ~ "MANDOLINISTAS" ~ it's a quiet revolution and before we know it all sessions will be mandolin orchestra rehearsals... Oh the pain and shame of letting them get away with this. The mandolins will inherit the earth...
Re: THE MANDOLIN ~ Is it really innocent and blameless?
Has anybody heard the "Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain"? We should recruit them to do battle with the "Mandolinistas", they play Nirvana songs on TV so they must be hard... :-S
Re: THE MANDOLIN ~ Is it really innocent and blameless?
'I agree with spoon...
Except that some of the players aren't blameless."
Criostoir - You miss my point entirely. *All* mandolin players are innocent and blameless. Any misdomeanour on the part of a mandolin player is entirely the fault of the instrument.
Re: THE MANDOLIN ~ Is it really innocent and blameless?
There used to be an outfit playing on the Wireless on 'Workers' Playtime' called Trois and his Mandoleers. They they seemed to alternate with the Big Ben Banjo Band
Re: THE MANDOLIN ~ Is it really innocent and blameless?
Damn, I love it... I'll have to see if I can hunt up a picture of my old friend's mandolin group ~ they had a BASS MANDOLIN!!! And they also had two harp guitars... I have to admit, I loved their music, so much fun...
THE MANDOLIN ~ Is it really innocent and blameless? :-/

Horror stories of manolinists welcome...

My username used to be plucker, but I don't claim to be a manolist (isn't that a wearer of designer stilettos?)

It's not the *mandolin* that's innocent and blameless - it's the player.

Except that some of the players aren't blameless. I was at a session a couple weeks ago with a "mandolinist" and he was acting like a bodhranai.

I find that if you put their head through the drum and then use the beater on it, it works just as well.
