Re: What's the most beautiful song to play on fiddle?

Just for clarity - do you mean song? Or any tune?

Do we have to sing it while playing? (If so, btw, as a serious suggestion, it would be A Week Before Easter for me, voice and fiddle.)

Re: What's the most beautiful song to play on fiddle?

Catriona McKay's "The Swan LK243" is a beautiful harp tune. I heard her play with Chris Stout on fiddle and was blown away. You can see a video of it on their www.fiddlersbid.com site.

Note: This is not the same song that is linked to their "Da Farder Ben Da Welcomer" cd on the RECORDINGS area. That is a different "The Swan" tune.

Re: What's the most beautiful song to play on fiddle?

There seems to be a lot of confusion on this recently. You don't play songs, you sing them. Sorry if I sound a bit cranky here but you play tunes and sing songs!

I really like the Fanny Power waltz. I first heard it at a session, and made an arrangement for my middle school orchestra. Now, the kids really like it as well.

I agree with showaddydadito.

A beautiful tune i've heard is a Calvin Volrath tune called Mist over Cape Breton. If you can find it give a listen

Actually, I have not heard the above on harp, but imagine it would be grand.

Harpers take note?

Re: What's the most beautiful song to play on fiddle?

I have always been fond of the air Ned of the Hill myself, a tune that lends itself to a very slow and plaintive rendering.

Re: What's the most beautiful song to play on fiddle?

Always liked Iain MacLachlan's / Dark Island since I heard it as the theme tune for a 1960's TV thriller (in thrilling b+w). Didn't know then this was 'traditional music' - or at least written in the style of trad. Just really liked the moodiness of the piece. Was probably one of the first pieces of trad /folky stuff to catch my ear as a youngster (between about 5 and fifty something -it was all jazz - then I discovered a local ITM session!)
