Can you read?!

Can you read?!

For christ's sake, why don't people bother to learn abc before they post tunes? Why don't they check their abc using software? Jeremy requests this specifically, and yet it's ignored time and time again.

Ok, I'm just warning you, I've been really patient up till now, but there's a lot of sh1te getting through these days, and I'm sick of wasting my time bringing crap up onto my screen. From now on, I'm going to start saying what I really think about these tunes. You thought I was judgemental and horrible before? Ye ain't seen nuthin' yet.

We appreciate tunes which make us feel sad. we appreciate tunes which make us want to dance, why shouldn't we appreciate tunes that have the rare gift of rolling on the floor p*ssing our jeans?

Must agree with the moans and groans about the ABCs posted without due care. The examples given above by 'c' are typical. There is so much guidance and advice on ABC use on this site that there is really no excuse for such rubbish to be submitted.

Life is too short to have to sift through the garbage on this fine site to find the gems!

Maybe a way of stopping all this crap is if you could choose if you wrote it out like sheet music or in ABC format, because for people like me, who don't read or write ABC, it's like another bloody langauge.

Re: Can you read?!

abc takes about 5-10 minutes to learn. It's not rocket science.

# Posted on May 24th 2007 by Dow

Re: Can you read?!

The reason I am trying to post in it is because there is no other way!!!!! I wanted to post an orginal tune that I am proud of and thought others would like to hear, I have tried my hardest and all I get is a pile of abuse!!! I read the help section and as far as I am concerned, followed it to the letter. Maybe a little encouragement for starting out musicians like me may want us to carry on learning, rather than give it up, which is, quite frankly, what I feel like doing

# Posted on May 24th 2007 by mandolinman

Re: Can you read?!

It took me a *little* longer than that Dow, but it's still pretty easy.

And you're dead right - let's start getting to the point ...

So, there's absolutely no excuse for submitting rubbish like the above examples. When it's self-composed as well, and the only conceivable reason for posting it is the self-absorption of the deluded wasters who post this crap - it's bloody outrageous!

# Posted on May 24th 2007 by benhall.1

What a crock of shight mandolinman. You've been emailed before things got public. Help was offered. It was even suggested that you send your attampts at ABCing to one of us to HELP!!! ~ BUT YOU COULDN'T BE BOTHERED... So no excuses for the garbage you've recently cranked out... We tried the nice way with you, more than willing to help, even with a bad tune, but you couldn't be bothered and instead bumbled through again on your own... So you've little cause to moan...

Encouragement? ~ there is a limitless amount to dole out amongst the folks here, mostly who are willing to give aid... But when an ego comes along too large to accept that assistance, and who charges forward without regards for basic courtesy and consideration for the site and its members, which is abusive ~ well, the paitence and the courtesy will quickly erode on this end.

Re: Can you read?!

I don't really see what all this abuse directed at Mandolinman is all about. OK, so his ABC transcription wasn't so good, but it's not as if he's a serial ABC-rapist or anything. And actually, I think "Whiskey in a Pint Glass" works quite well if you play it as a polka rather than a reel. He's not doing it to spite or insult anyone, and to be honest, it's perfectly readable if you actually try to read it, rather than just look at it and say, "OMG! How, like, bad is that ABC?!"

Re: Can you read?!

Isn't part of the problem that this site lacks a focus on which there can be clear consensus.
Although I've been a member here for some time, I've only been at all active for the last few months, so my perspective may be narrow, but I even have a sense that there is a near consensus that music of interest here does not have to be traditional (in any obvious sense), or Irish (in any unambiguous sense). It seems to be understood as nothing more than a genre thing. So who is going to set boundaries of what is traditional, what is Irish, what is good?
If it weren't for Comhaltas ITM would probably be as significant now as the traditional music of West Bromwich. At least their rules make some kind of sense!

# Posted on May 25th 2007 by Lingpupa

Efforts were made to try to help Mandoman and they seemed to be for nought... But maybe we shouldn't try to help? Anyway, yes, that's abuse, and yes, maybe it is best not to answer frustration with calling something a "crock of shight", even if it is? And the there are blessed people in the world whose poo don't stink either... :-/

# Posted on May 25th 2007 by ceolachan

Re: Can you read?!

Bellman, it wasn't so much the nature of the tunes as the ABCs, which are not as they were originally, in most cases. Also, it was about the FAQs as Jeremy has laid them down, with regards to self-compositions, that on the whole the site isn't about that, but if you are so driven, that one at least have the courtesy to contribute other things first, roughly 5 to 1... It's a discussion that has come up several times in the past...

But the main frustration was with people submitting ABCs without bothering to learn them first, or to accept help and guidance from the many generous people here on site. I don't know anyone, though there may be a few, who wouldn't offer help.

I don't care if it's a tune I like or not. I don't see that really matters. I can always choose from the other thousands on site here. So for me it isn't about the tune, it is about the mess and not bothering to learn the basics of ABCs before slopping a load of it in the tunes section... Like a kid handing your their mud pie ~ "I did this!" :-D The cuteness or humour of it wears off, like here, after four in a row...

Re: Can you read?!

Been a silent observer of the site for a few years now and have found it quite entertaining at times. Joined once with the idea of posting a sesson but thought better of it. Personally I don't learn tunes from the internet though it's a neat little tool for some I'm sure. Problem is that the tune is only as good as the person who posts it whether it be the way they hear it or their skill using this abc format and such. Tune books can be the same. Different book - different version and some are real dogs. The thing I do like about this site is the reference to the various recordings of a tune. No matter if you fiddle, squeeze a box, spit down a flute or stroke a goat skin etc etc you can find a version from a player you admire. Get a copy and emulate it. That is, until you're so good people emulate you!!! Printed stuff is a good guide to the basic tune but not the be all. Having said that, since this site seems to get around and might be the first port of call for the uninitiated be good if the tunes posted at least maintained the integrity of the tune.

# Posted on May 25th 2007 by mad for trad

Re: Can you read?!

"What a crock of shight" was not aimed at the person but at the undoubted "crock of shight" that the person felt entitled to inflict on the world.

That's not abuse - that's observation.

Personally, I'm fed up with people pussy-footing around and not saying what they mean, so I say 'Good on ya, ceolachan'.

# Posted on May 25th 2007 by benhall.1

Re: Can you read?!

And I also want to add... while I think it's a good thing that people want to write their own tunes, after all that's how they (the tunes) all got a start in the first place, this site really isn't the place to share them or air them. Go blog 'em somewhere else. Recent original tunes get up through continued circulation - maybe at sessions or through being heard a lot for one reason or another and they get played because musicians want to play them and so on and so on.

Re: Can you read?!

"Printed stuff is a good guide to the basic tune but not the be all. Having said that, since this site seems to get around and might be the first port of call for the uninitiated be good if the tunes posted at least maintained the integrity of the tune."

Yeah. This is my whole point. The thing about music notation is a different argument. So is the whole composition thing in a way. I'm actually concerned with something far more basic and problematic: tune submissions which *aren't even a bloody tune*, because someone hasn't bothered to learn how to transcribe, and just go lidughb nkfjgbhfdhgnkdfhgnbjkhbn with their keyboard and then click on submit like a complete wazzack. Well you know what? Go right ahead and carry on doing it, but you can be damned sure that when it does I for one am not gonna beat around the bush anymore as a regular, active contributor and user of this site. If I see a sh1t tune, I'm just gonna say it's sh1t. Period.

Playing the victim to get the sympathy vote, oh dear. Look, if "giving up" means you're gonna stop posting crap in the tunes section, then great, give up. If it means you want to give up the music, then why would some comments on the internet make you want to do that if you really love the music? The mind boggles.

Re: Can you read?!

Regarding posting original tunes: Jeremy's policy on posting original tunes is clear, so I don't need to add anything to it except that I agree with it. If someone is in violation of that policy then it's up to Jeremy to deal with it.

Regarding ABCs: If someone posts crap ABCs for their own crap original tunes then I think the best thing do is simply ignore it and let it slip into obscurity. If they post crap ABCs to other people's tunes that we might like to have included in the database, or established trad tunes, then we should try to help them make the corrections as best we can and hope that Jeremy cleans up any mess if necessary.

Regarding this ridiculous thread: it's all been a waste of time and space

Yes PB, that is mostly what happens, and mostly behind the scenes. Jeremy has enough to do with work, life and this site and can't clean up every mess. Whatever the tune or its source, I believe in the ABCs and will and have offered help, usually appreciated.

Oh, and I ALWAYS tell them they have a freedom of choice on whether to use the '>' and '<', and I always tell them that some folks really don't like swing notated...

(Damn ~ dinner ~ must rush, and I've several 'Someones' who've asked for help ~ with their ABCs... ;-) )
