When visiting many discussion boards and bulletin boards on the net, I've noticed many have used programs that are already written and available on the web...many free ones. I'd have to dig around to find a few examples, but one I noticed offhand was used on a recent thread here about starting a new website geared to celtic interests. Let me go see the name of it. brb
Visit groups.yahoo.com and set up your own discussion group there. It's easy, comes in a ready-made format and you can appoint administrator and guest roles to the participants. Make sure you register with Yahoo first using the appropriate link.
Ok I'm looking at some source code now, My web page will be online in 3-5 days when it is I'll give out the adress in Links and in thesession.org forum:->
I think it would be cool to have a trad music Wiki, if you know what i'm talking about. I'd love to be able to edit my posts and get rid of the more stupid ones. Another model that's used a lot is the slashdot forum.
But the coolest thing about thesession.org is that there are these different sections, tunes, recordings, and they sometimes relate, like, you post a tune, you can get a list of the recordings where other tunes with the same name appear.
Forgot to mention that, Trev. I assumed he would know that, but good to always warn to be aware of copyrites! You can usually email and get permission. Most ppl I've asked have been quite generous about it. Even about answering questions regarding coding. Just be sure the person giving the permission is the person who holds the copyrite. I've never tackled something of the scope you are, Dafydd, but what little I have done gave me such an appreciation for what I see online. Dafydd...hats off to you and Jeremy.
I use software I purchased for $50 from webbbs.com (my boards are at www.cardcounter.com) -- it is (IMHO) the best available. It is very easy to install, and highly cusomizable. They also have a free version available.
To any fellow techies out there,

Re: To any fellow techies out there,
The thread is at http://www.thesession.org/discussions/display.php/1339
The site with the free forum program is
www.phpbb.com
I know there are others out there if you search.
If you're into programming for yourself, you can view the source code on many sites and learn from it/adapt for it your own uses.
And many many sites have free tools for building and improving forum sites.
Your search engine is your friend.

Re: To any fellow techies out there,
When "borrowing" source codes from commercial sites be very careful about the possibility of copyright infringement.
