Dear friends,
I'm passing along this message from Jerry Holland

I am planning a series of
>>fund-raising concerts and events, because he will undoubtedly be
>>losing
>>some work, although we all have our fingers crossed about his summer. You
>>can also at any time send a check made out to him, and mail to me, Beth
>>Telford, at 1060 Bent Hill Rd, Braintree, VT 05060. He has a local account
>>where I can make deposits for him. Musicians, please email or call me if
>>you're willing to help. As you all know, Jerry is not only a great
>>musician but one of the finest friends a person could ever have. Please
>>keep him in your hearts. He's the last person who would ask for help, but
>>he needs it, and that's what friends are for.
>>
>>Thanks, everyone,
>>Beth

Hi Folks,
>>
>>I hope all is well and happy.
>>
>>I've some bad news if you haven't heard already. It looks like I have
>>bone
>>cancer and the talk is, that they will be taking my leg. I go into Halifax
>>on Tuesday coming and they'll do a biopsy and I think they have Friday
>>booked for taking my leg. I hope to find out that it's no where else in my
>>body. I wouldn't have been surprised if they first told me that I had lung
>>cancer, but this first???? They told me that they think that this is the
>>only spot. Bone scan says this and a full chest scan/ex-ray I think they
>>called it a CT Scan. Blood tests, he said looked ok?? They did an MRI and
>>a CAT scan and the Doctor in Halifax has that info. I haven't heard what
>>those test results are. I'll know I guess on Tuesday. It will help in
>>giving me some idea what gigs I'll have to cancel. I don't want to cancel
>>any if I don't have to, as these 3 months is where I make my years income.
>>I'm sorry for dumping this on you folks, I thought you should know when I
>>had some clear info. Thank you very much for your loyal support.
>>Please say a little pray for me.
>>My best wishes to all
>>Jerry

Here's to a fine fiddler, composer, and grand man. May he have much better health and many, many more tunes to share with us all in the years to come.

Re: Thoughts and prayers for Jerry Holland Cape Breton Fiddler

I will certainly be thinking of Jerry and I wish him a very speedy return to performing. I was privilaged to see him perform in Buncrana along with Howie MacDonald at the end of March.

Re: Thoughts and prayers for Jerry Holland Cape Breton Fiddler

Thank goodness it's a leg and not an arm...but that being said, Jerry is just about one of the best people anywhere. Not to mention fiddler. My prayers are definitely with him.

Re: Thoughts and prayers for Jerry Holland Cape Breton Fiddler

Jerry,
...Not the best news to receive, tho you are still at the beginning of the journey and may get some good news after the biopsy results come in. I also had similar news myself in late 1995. Tumor in the leg (bottom end of my femur), surgical biopsy which indicated cancerous tissue, then 'limb salvage' surgery, a recurrence in 1999 and an amputation / reattachment surgery called a Van Nes Rotationplasty. I am very well now, and very active with my unique reattachment. And I was 43 when I had the reattachment, which is unusual for this approach, as they usually do this surgery with children.

Music has always been my tonic and energizer, and we are most fortunate to have this wonderful outlet, and the wonderful folks we session with. Jerry, Good thoughts and energy to you, and also to those dear ones going through this with you,
Jane

Re: Thoughts and prayers for Jerry Holland Cape Breton Fiddler

A web site has been set up to help with fundraising for Jerry as he's going to need time to recuperate, and will provide notices about various fundraising events as they are scheduled.

The URL is:

http://www.jerryhollandfund.org

I haven't heard amything about the results of the biopsy that was supposed to be done today, but I'll post more information as I find things out.

Please keep Jerry in your thoughts,

Jeff W

Re: Thoughts and prayers for Jerry Holland Cape Breton Fiddler

My wife and I had the pleasure to meet and listen to Jerry on two occations in Cape Breton last summer - we were both astounded by his warm, friendly and welcoming spirit.

To us Jerry Holland is just what great music and musicianship is really about. We wish him all the best.

A Prayer for Jerry Holland please

I'm not sure if you are aware but the great Jerry Holland, fiddler and composer extraordinaire from Cape Breton, has been diagnosed with bone cancer. He is currently in Halifax, Nova Scotia undergoing tests. It looks like Jerry is likely to lose his leg as a result of the cancer and this may happen as early as May 25th.

I know Jerry has been an inspiration to myself and many fiddlers alike. His contribution to traditional fiddle music is impossible to describe in words.

Any of us who have had the opportunity to meet Jerry and speak with him know what an outstanding person he is, always smiling and offering a kind word.

Please keep Jerry in your thoughts and say a prayer for him in his treatment and hopefully speedy recovery.

Man, this week keeps getting worse...first Peerie Willie passes on and now this is happening to Jerry Holland...my prayers are with him for sure, I'm a big fan of his playing and he was such a nice guy and a big help during his workshop in Edinburgh a few years ago.

Re: A Prayer for Jerry Holland please

This was in another thread earlier on the session site

http://www.jerryhollandfund.org/

Most of you have already gotten news of Jerry Holland's latest medical woes. While lurking on www.thesession.org last night, I came across this website, devoted to Jerry Holland's benefit. It contains some relevant information about his current situation, as well as some very nice photos.

Let's all keep him in our thoughts and prayers.

Re: A Prayer for Jerry Holland please

Hi,
I emailed Beth - United States contact - about maybe setting up a Paypal donation option. If anyone has any experience using it for online donations - please give her a shout - LUKEYDOG@INNEVI.COM

I suspect they'd get alot more donations if they offered an online donation option.

Best,
Jen Ford

Re: A Prayer for Jerry Holland please

Beth send out an update today (Sat 5/266) on Jerry's condition. Things may be better than they seemed; it was initially thought that he might lose the leg.

Here's the latest:

Hello all,

Just to let you know how things are going with Jerry. As planned, the tumour was removed today (Friday), and the space in the bone packed and reinforced. There will be a bit of radiation therapy and then some more testing to locate the
primary site. His cheer is good. He has just been overwhelmed with the warm wishes of people from near and far and he'd love to be able to reply to everyone but the hospital duties are pretty demanding! Because of the
surgery he'll need some quiet time in the next week, but he looks forward tobeing in touch soon afterwards.

Anyone inclined to drop Jerry a card can send it to:

Jerry Holland
367 Johnson Road
Georges River, Nova Scotia
Canada B1Y 3C1

Cheers,

Jeff
