Irish Folk Metal

Irish Folk Metal

Well, at heart I've always been a big heavy metal fan.
And how better to enjoy both worlds than combine Irish music with some metal?
And yes this is the real Shane McGowan who helped record this EP. Has some nice guitar near the end too:)

Any other people who like to cross over Irish music with other genres?

Re: Irish Folk Metal

That was a bit much for me. Good up until the guy with the harsh voice came in, then I had to stop listening. Sorry.

Re: Irish Folk Metal

Excellent, especially Shane, that raw passion is hard to match.

Re: Irish Folk Metal

I like Irish trad because it has a lot of genuine excitement, regardless of the size of the production--a mark of musical integrity, I think. A good tune is a good tune, whether you play it very big, very small, or anywhere inbetween.

I suspect that if you shrank this example down and played it small, it would be pretty boring.

Re: Irish Folk Metal

I love this song. Me and my (accoustic) guitarist do this with a fair bit of improvisation, and I really enjoy doing it.

Yes, Shane IS great ... But ... is it my imagination, or is he turning into Father Jack?

Re: Irish Folk Metal

Back to your question--yes, I do sometimes combine Irish and other kinds of music.

It's easy, really, because Irish music is an important ancestor of so many of today's music styles. And general audiences seem to like the genre-combining trick pretty well. But I wouldn't say it's an improvement over the original.

Re: Irish Folk Metal

Oh, 'folk" no!! =P

... Corny.

Anyway.

Uh, hm... I really don't know what to think about the metal part of it that comes in halfway.. It's kind of like apples and oranges for me. I like both, but combined? Hmmm... Mmmm... Rammstein...

Cheers,
Armand

Re: Irish Folk Metal

I'm having a hard time following the logic of this. The song was written by an Irishman, it's true. It was made popular by Christy Moore, who is also Irish. Christy Moore has played a fair bit of more or less traditional material in his long and successful career.
All well and good, but somehow I fail to see that this adds up to it being an example of ITM.
I've heard the song too often for it to do much for me anyway, though I really didn't like the bit where someone started shouting.

Re: Irish Folk Metal

how did you manage to get shane on the track?I am a massive fan of mixing and integrating Irish music into other genres of music, it makes it more exciting and adventurous. In my mind there is no boundaries of what you can do in music!

Re: Irish Folk Metal

In regards to genre mixing...

I made a Reggae version of The Swallows Tail Reel once.

Be warned, some people may find this upsetting.

Re: Irish Folk Metal

I don't know about this being 'metal'. The singing definitely isn't. Too tame. Certain things only McGowan can get away with. Heard lots of better versions of this song and quite liked some of them.

Re: Irish Folk Metal

Interesting version of "Ride On". Not really heavy, this metal.
My preferred one is by Mary Coughlin on their EP.
And the speed fun punk version of the other band in our practice room ;-)

Better celtic heavy metal can be found. For instance from the helvetic band
http://www.eluveitie.ch/

They try to look very mean and angry, but are nice guys and some of them join Irish session here, too!

Re: Irish Folk Metal

WRT the original clip, the girl who sings does so in a very strange accent. Slightly Irish, but mostly American deep south (or something)
"...raaid the faaines' haw'se..."
and so on.
Pathetic.

Re: Irish Folk Metal

Hmm, I kinda like Eluveitie ... I've been a fan of metal and ITM for a long time. I don't really like that "death metal" voice, though ... I prefer metal bands with a singer that can actually sing. "Musically" though, they've got a lot of drive....

If "folk metal" is your thing, there's a pretty cool Finnish band called Korpiklaani. They also throw trad. instruments in with metal, but it's not "Celtic".

Re: Irish Folk Metal

"prefer singer that actually *can* sing" might a wrong idea. This singer can sing, but prefers the "death metal voice" in this band. HE actually is a great musician and his own project are a unique blend of techno, death metal, ra,p classical and folk influences... and he mixed and produced our CD, too and it was a real pleasure to work with him.

Re: Irish Folk Metal

Finnish folk metal band ''Turisas'' feature an accordion and fiddle player. The melodies aren't Irish but they're similar.

Re: Irish Folk Metal

My favorite folk metal bands have to be Finntroll (finnish polka metal!) and Ulytau (Kazakh metal featuring violin and dombra.) Dombra's a contender for my favorite strummed instrument. 2 strings but amazing harmony and ornamentation!
