Hi there - Im new to the board, and how glad I am to find it!
Im a 20 year old student nurse from Derry living in East London.
I have had a quick look through the sessions listings and saw loads in London - so was basically looking for some info on them - Where are the most popular and those that really dont mind anyone joining in?
I'd love to get chatting to anyone who is invovled in Irish Trad Music here in the City - but Im conscious of travelling distance - so places like Lewisham and Hammersmith arent really all that practical!
Anyway, Im going to mosey on through the site here and get stuck in - Lookin' forward to hearing from you!
Hey there! I'm a regular to Paeders and the Boundfor in Derry, also 20 years old, wonder if I know you! Going to London this summer for a few days, so would also like to know about London sessions!
Elizabeth - funny you'd think Lewisham not to be practical. It's at the end of one branch of the DLR. http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloads/lon_con.pdf
There is one session in Lewisham on sunday afternoon, but that's no good to you as you're after weeknights. We have the Blythe Hill Tavern a bit further south on the South Circular Road, Catford/Forest Hill. Not a bad session at all these days, but getting back to East London might be hard if you leave ot too late.
Maniac Lad - I live in Woodford - it would be a bit of a trek to Lewisham, and deff to Catford! I used to live in Halls at London Bridge, and so getting the bus down that way wasnt a biggie, but I think Id rather go into town than out to the 'burbs
Stiofan, where abouts are you from? I moved down to Magherafelt to finnish school, so kinda missed out on the city scene :( But Im still a Derry girl! (well m'felt is still county doire anyway innit?! lol)
So are there many folks here that head to sessions in town?
CGF - Are you a reg at McMahons? What time do things kick off there?
If you can at all make it to the tir na nog on Garratt lane in Wandsworth on a saturday night, theres great music and a very welcoming atmosphere, a brilliant session
The people that have made the trek from east london to Dylans in Lewisham on a sunday tea time have always said how much they enjoyed it and returned when they could. if you get a night off then come down at to us or go to waxy o'conners off leicester square (they are both jumping sessions). I'm told paul's session in stratford is a good one. i'm trying to organise a wednesday night one near greenwich. i'll post it on the web once i get it sorted.
Also, I played at a pub called 'The Antelope' in leytonstone on st. patricks day. the landlady seemed very keen to get a regular session going but it's too far for me to travel. if anyone wants to organise it the send me an e-mail and i'll give you the landlady's number.
Thanks for all the info guys, The Cobden Arms and the Adelaide look like places I'll definately be popping along to.
As for the suggestion of Waxy's, that is already our regular hang out, so you dont need to tell me about the atmosphere there!
Like I said though Im never usually free on a Sunday, so its the Wed and Thurs sessions that have me interested.
We were re-directed from a more out-of-the-way Camden Pub to the Cobden Arms a few weeks ago, and found a session so full they wouldn't let another couple of musicians in, on health and safety grounds, as we'ld have blocked the front door and exit.
But this was on a Friday. Don't know if it was a one-off or a regular, we tend to stick to our normal circuit.
Maybe you should get there early. We should have.
Really, Mr. Anderson.
I'd have expected better from you. What's happened to the searing wit and earth-shattering sarcasm we've become so used to?
Hung-over again are we?

Woodford to Catford - yeah you're right. The other side of the galaxy near enough. Still, bear it in mind.

Ha bloody ha PK. Before I, or more importantly Elizabeth, gets maligned any further, let me rephrase: week nights, not wee knights.

Re: Sessions in London - Where are the best?
The Blythe session is fantastic, but it has one big problem. No, not that it's too far away from anywhere. It's that Key Maniac Lad goes.
