Hi all, the 6th annual trad weekend is advertised in the Events section and its on next weekend (May18th-20th) as you are all keenly aware. http://www.thesession.org/events/display/314
Anyway, as part of hijacking this great discussion forum to advertise it, I would like to hear from any of you out there who have been here for it in the past, participated or instructed or even just taken the time to browse the website for the details. http://www.skerriestraditionalmusic.com
What do you think of the program, the format, the potential, the instruments catered for at the workshops ? All constructive criticism is welcomed alongside of the abundance of praise you are bound to heap on this. Gotta be balanced !! Too late to change anything for this year (the 6th year) but your input may help with next years planning.
Thanks,
Kevin.
I wish I was still in the area... The only comment I have to offer, and it is soemthing I hold as a 'need', is some kind of follow on. By this I mean that I consider a one-day workshop in anything as welcome, but incomplete... It would be that much more productive for workshops to have a 'sequence', in this case, a weekend, that could be accomplished with your workshops as given on Saturday, and a 'follow up' on Sunday. So, what I'm suggesting for your future, just as regards workshops, is two days worth. If someone was to take an instrumental or dance workshop on Saturday, they could then come back on Sunday with any questions Saturday would have raised, and an opportunity to both review and further what they had learned. That extra flash of knowledge is a blessing. In my experience as a student, teacher, and organizer of such things ~ you need at least two days worth, more in an ideal world.... Best of luck and a long future...
PS ~ I think this is a great way to use the discussion part of this website, both to promote a good thing and to seek constructive feedback... Don't forget to ask again after the event...
Website basics ~ remember that things you might take for granted may not be common knowledge to those that find or are directed to your website. You should design and write out of consideation for those people. As an example, don't assume everyone knows what a 'Skerries' is, or where... Also, some sort of introduction to who and what you are would be welcome, a bit of history, and maybe even a small statement of purpose or ambition?
Sorry, I seem to be dropping in and out here... I believe in the sort of activity your putting on, with all my heart.
You could also include some pictures of previous events, tasters, and also some comments from folks that have attended in the past, that bit of history to tie it all together and give it a place in time. The proof that it has a history is also proof of success. That's a good thing, promote your success and celebrate your history and dedication by sharing some of that proof, the records of that history and success, like pictures and personal accounts. And, if you've got some humour to throw in, that is always a good thing, evidence of the craic..
Thanks a milion Ceolachan for taking the time to add so much here. I'm listening and taking note. I'll try to expand our website to include some of the photos, etc. I agree with your thoughts on the workshops.
I was hoping that the links at the top of the page would draw in some people to read some more on the events page and on our own website.
Anyway, just to help, Skerries is a small vibrant town in North County Dublin in an area known as Fingal which the pipers among you will associate with Seamus Ennis (as in The Return to Fingal). We have a small core of local traditional musicians and dancers and are working on promoting the music and dance among the youth of the area. This annual weekend event was born out of this attempt to expose the youngsters to the playing of the well known exponents who are available throughout the country at other festivals to pass on their knowledge.
Kevin.
I've just copied this from the Comments section on the Events page. Kevin. .................
