Swannanoa 2007 Celtic Week

Swannanoa 2007 Celtic Week

Now I don't know most of you personally, but I'm going to Celtic Week in July and will be assigned a bunk mate randomly. If anyone on the list is going or you turn out to be someone I know, I'd rather choose my own roomie. I guess I'd know you better than random...?

So, who's going?

As you might guess, I play tenor banjo (7 years) and fiddle (10 years).

Hey I'll be there...but I already have a roommate, sorry!

They generally do a good job of assigning roommates...and the worst that could happen is that you don't absolutely become best friends and you don't have to spend all you time together...in fact the whole sleeping thing isn't really a big thing at Swannanoa, haha...

Good luck, and I'll se you there!

I take it you unfortunate Americans need any relief from suburbia,as outlined in this film (thanks MF, for putting me onto this site):

such as this Swannanoa festival.

Re: Swannanoa 2007 Celtic Week

Well, in my case, I'm not escaping suburbia to go to this wonderful "place worth caring about" in Asheville, North Carolina. My city, Chico, is another place worth caring about, as we have a great downtown center where people love to hang out and a great music scene and the 3rd largest city park in America (where Robin Hood with Errol Flynn was filmed...Bidwell Park).

Yes, as the lecturer states, there are many places not worth caring about, but they aren't limited to America. I'm going to Asheville b/c I have a friend to see in the area and the artists teaching this year are a draw for me, so it's a good reason for a vacation.

And to awesomepossum...see you there!

Good. Glad to hear it. Hope you liked the talk though.

Re: Swannanoa 2007 Celtic Week

You're right, such places are certainly not limited to America. But the trend is for more and more of these places to appear, following the American model...or driven by the "car", if you know what I mean.

Re: Swannanoa 2007 Celtic Week

How random is this bunk mate stuff ? Looking around the sessions there are lots of wonderful folks whom I would not necessarily like to share a bunk with .
While others …………………….

Re: Swannanoa 2007 Celtic Week

I went two years ago and found the random roommate process to have worked out fine. You don't spend much time in your room anyway, nor will you and your roommate necessarily be taking the same classes or doing the same things outside of class, e.g., sessions, song swaps, practicing, etc. It will be a great experience and worth the roommate gamble. I'm still reaping the benefits of what I learned.

By the way, I live in Redding. Do the Pub Scouts ever come up here? I'm not aware of any sessions that regularly happen in Redding other than a bunch of us getting together at someone's house from time to time, and then it's mostly songs rather than tunes. (Not a complaint, just a fact.)

Re: Swannanoa 2007 Celtic Week

I'll be there with my roommate/GF. We're both flute players.

The first year I went I had the random roomie deal - it worked out really well. As long as you don't end up with a complete tool, it will be a good thing. I met a lot more people through my roomie than I would have on my own.

Pretty much the only thing your room is for is crashing. . . . and don;t plan on getting much sleep.

Re: Swannanoa 2007 Celtic Week

Yeah like I said banjobabe (restating it yet again, as others have already said)...you won't be sleeping anyway, so if you can't stand your roommate then you still won't have to see them.

(dave, the sign up form has a space where you check your age group, and other check boxes for early bird/night owl/chemically sensitive). As a general thing it works well.

The only horror story I've heard in the several years I've been going was my friend's...she had a roommate one year that got separation anxiety from her children which led to nightmares about them being eaten be wolverines or something which led to her screaming "NOT MY BABIES!" In the middle of the night...but se was a very nice person, I met her the next year (and apparently got quiet after my friend threw a pillow at her).

Re: Swannanoa 2007 Celtic Week

I couldn't decide if I was a night owl or an early bird. I'm kinda both but if I decided to stay up late (which will be most of the time) I didn't want to disturb someone.

And then, I'm kind of a light sleeper and a snorer would definitely put a damper on things. Maybe that's the question they should ask :-). I need my sleep, so I usually do the one night on, one off...stay out late every other night thing.

And mjct, Pub Scouts don't generally get to Redding, but we play every Friday still at Duffy's from 4-7 and you're welcome! We don't have songs, not b/c we don't like them, but b/c it's too noisy in there and you can really only hear the tunes if you're in the circle or standing near by.

And Maniac...yes I enjoyed the lecture. My estimation of the reason for American sprawl is the newness of American settlement as well as the size of the country. Settlers who came here moved out quickly and as towns were being set up, new technology such as cars made it easier to go further. Europe was built around walkers. Many people missed the "community" aspect of the downtown and as a result, they're making a comeback. Thanks for posting that link.

Re: Swannanoa 2007 Celtic Week

Hey,

Anyone up for a Session session during Celtic week? I imagine we'll all cross paths at some point during the week, but it might be nice to connect personas with faces.

Let's meet by the beer tent. Pick a night :-)

Re: Swannanoa 2007 Celtic Week

Our daughter won a youth scholarship for the Celtic harp, so we are going to be there...toting that heavy thing around! I'm signed up for intro to Celtic fiddle and, dare I say it (yes, I do), bodhran II. Roommates are easy for us: family.
