I've been on it for a year and thinking of getting off as I've got most all of what I want and they don't seem to be adding much ITM of late. But I have collected a lot of good stuff over the past few months. Just need to find the time to listen to it all.
It looks like they have a great selection, srt......
Taste is such a personal thing, I wouldn't know where to begin to try to help you. You can e-mail me if you like.
Just looking through the "A"s, I can see that I have music by Alasdair Fraser & Tony MacManus, Aly Bain & Phil Cunningham, Andy M. Stewart, Anna Massie,( Scottish guitarist) and Annebjorg Lien (Norwegian Fiddler)
Just came from the eMusic site. There's all kinds of good trad there. Try searching under these labels: Green Linnet, Shanachie, Compass, Dara, Maggie's Music, Culburnie, Topic.
(Make sure in the search box you use the drop down arrow to indicate label.)
Once you get to a label page, check ALL the subcategories on the left. LOTS of albums are badly miscategorized on eMusic. Under the Topic label, for example, I clicked International and found only one album, from the Balkans. I then clicked Country/Folk, and found 166 albums of English and Celtic trad. (I don't feel like quibbling about the word Celtic here; you all know what it means in this context and I'm just trying to point
srt19170 to the good stuff.)
For Green Linnet: When you search on this label, you'll find more than one result. Under GL/Psychobaby, click the subcategory International, and then the further subcategory Celtic/British Isles for one list of GL albums.
Under GL / Digital Music works, click the subcategory New Age (Remember I said things are miscategorized here!) for a different list of GL albums.
Lately, I've happily found several albums no longer available as CDs among these GL lists, and added them to my collection. (Even though I would be happy to buy the CDs if they ever go into print again.)
Of course, you can also search for individual artists or albums.
If you’re seeking comments about specific albums you find on eMusic, post again. (Well, we don’t know your general tastes or what you already own…)
Actually Geoff W, Alistair Mculloch calls himself a celtic fiddler [or his website does at least xD]
No help to suggestions sorry. I don't go on Emusic.
I used "Celtic" on purpose since I'm certainly open to hearing music outside Irish trad.
I already many of the more obvious albums. I was hoping to be pointed to good, out-of-the-way stuff without having to dig through the entire mountain of music. For instance, recent discussions led me to look for Paddy Carty and Sam Bartlett.
So let me rephrase my question -- Please suggest "hidden gems" on Emusic.com...
As for rejoining, I quit and they almost immediately start entreating me to return -- the latest entreaty included an additional 50 free songs so back I am!
Don't forget the compilations - there are a few Finbarr Dwyer tracks and the like on some otherwise unpromising titles - search by artist name. Look at the lists compiled by others who bought the same stuff and you can wander around in there long enough
I have found lots of good stuff on emusic. Frankie Gavin, Kevin Burke, Tommy Peoples, Andy McGann, Johnny Cunningham (listed as John Cunningham, unfortunately), Liz Carroll, Liz Doherty, Eileen Ivers, Lunasa, John Doherty, just to name some. Some good collections, too -- check out the Wheels of the World collections 1 & 2. Somewhere in the "browse" area you can browse Celtic or some such general category. There are well over 1000 albums in this area, so you can just go through the list looking for interesting finds if you like. There is even one by a band I used to play with -- you can hear my mad mandolin playing on "Live Wisely" by Craic Wisely.
Not sure I've found any truly "hidden gems" on eMusic, but I was mighty pleased to find Paddy Carty's Traditional Irish Music. I've also found a fair bit of Celtic (ITM and Scottish trad) music played on the hammered dulcimer (which I'm learning).
More mainstream finds include Lunasa, Solas, and Boys of the Lough.
I've just been downloading some old Flanagan Bros tracks from "Past masters of Irish Dance Music" compilation
Not Irish, but one absolute gem from emusic I hadn't known about otherwise is "Poet: the songs of Townes van Zandt" by various artists
I was inducted by one of Donough's session mates for the sole initial purpose of getting "Retrograss" an album of eccentric covers by David Grisman, John Hartford and Mike Seeger, another album that is seldom off my turntable or desktop or clickwheel or whatever. I couldn't find it anywhere else at the time
Best Celtic Trad on Emusic?
Best Celtic Trad on Emusic?
I've just rejoined Emusic.com (for about the 3rd time
) and I'm taking suggestions for music to download. Any recommendations?

Re: Best Celtic Trad on Emusic?
Please define 'Celtic Trad' and identify anyone who has ever called him- or herself a 'Celtic' musician!

Is Natalie MacMaster on there? I'm in love with her new tune "Cape Classico".

Re: Best Celtic Trad on Emusic?
I'm still finding enough to fill my 40 a month habit on emusic.
For Irish, some of the user-compiled lists can be handy - have a look at this lot:
