Banjo

Banjo

Someone just e mailed me through The Session and asked for a reply but he did not leave is e mail address! So here is my reply....
My banjo playing housemate is only a learner himself. He's quite good already but only just started in October. He'd be delighted to teach bouzouki but as far as I know, he's self-taught on banjo. I'm not really sure of any ITM banjo players in Boston. There was one here for quite a while but he recently moved to Seattle.

If anyone knows of a good banjo player in the Boston area, please let me know!

Re: Banjo

Cara,
Sorry about the e-mail thing - I thought it was automatically included, or you could just hit reply or something, like with regular e-mail! Anyway, thanks for answering. I guess I'll just have to move to Seattle....

Re: Banjo

you might want to try to get in touch with the boston branch of cce, or try phoning the irish studies department at boston university. they might know something i don't about local banjo players/lessons.

Re: Banjo

What about Dave Cory? Is he still in Boston? Damn fine banjo player, one of the crop of young hotshots. Also plays bouzouki and bodhran. See http://www.9pintcoggie.com/ for some MP3 clips.

and Matt Heaton plays the banjo, but I think he's mainly playing guitar and fiddle now, dunno if he'd teach banjo.

Re: Banjo

dave moved to seattle to live with his sister back in october. he's coming back in mid march for a few weeks for the launch of his cd with some of the folks here in boston, but then he's back to seattle. matt doesn't teach banjo, although he will teach guitar.

Re: Banjo

Jeez, I can't believe there's a dearth of banjo players in Boston! Doesn't George know of any banjo players around, Cara?

Re: Banjo

Don't know if he teaches but you might want to contact Ted Davis for banjo lessions. He's known for his guitar playing but I heard him play the other nite at OLearys in Brookline (Boston) and he was very good. I'm sure you could track him down through any of the musicans that play at the Burren in Somerville.
