Folk musicians

Folk musicians

Dear All,

I'm planning to do a photography project on folk musicians in London.

I'd like to take photos of musicians some formal portraits, some in situ and some with other musicians to reflect and chronocle the history of folk music and its players in London.

If any one is interested in taking part, please give me a shout.

I look forward to hearing from you all soon.

Thanks,

Nick

Re: Folk musicians

Nick, I'm not there, and don't know the scene. But a great, great folk musician who is something of a legend in America has been living in London for a few decades now. He is Tom Paley, of the influential oldtime stringband, "The New Lost City Ramblers". Essential subject matter for any book on the subject! Also a great guy, and still an active musician, AFAIK.

Re: Folk musicians

Hi Nick,

not sure if Morris Dancing musicians would fit your project - if they do, Spring Grove Morris Men are dancing and playing at the Richmond Fayre on Richmond Green this coming Saturday 12 May at 1pm (and at the White Cross pub 12 noon)

Yopu should also check out the various sessions and folk clubs around London, for example at The Horseshoe and The George near London Bridge, and at the Acton Folk and Blues club http://homepage.ntlworld.com/goldfrog/acton/

Try Folk and Roots

Also contact the EFDSS at Cecil Sharp House in Camden for a wealth of contacts and people worth photographing.

I presume you know good spots to photograph buskers in situ - on the Tube, the South Bank, around Covent Garden, and on the sideroad that links Embankment and Charing Cross stations.

Re: Folk musicians

Well, "my" session is on next Monday, in the wilds of N2.
Also I'd second the comments on Tom Paley. He's often at Islington Folk Club on Thursdays, but it's a ticket-only event this week, I believe, and can also often be found at the Cellar Upstairs on a Saturday night, although that's not happening this Saturday due to a clash with the Musical Traditions Club Keith Summers Weekend....
Also Sharps at Cecil Sharp House Tuesdays...TONIGHT !
Also, Spootiskerry are playing live at Coldfall Wood on Sunday afternoon....
Look up the sessions here too, but check beforerhand if you can, things aren't always updated on this site, nobody likes to admit their session is closed....

Re: Folk musicians

For tube-playing buskers, the better ones are on the District Line between Earl's Court and Victoria.
