Right, not that this is likely to affect me for at least another year BUT I'm avoiding revising soooooo......Is there such a thing as an Australian Fleadh? Or am I dreaming? Or making it up or whatever?............
There's a fleadh on in Goulburn (just south of Sydney) on June 8-10 this year. I think you can find more info at http://www.irishmusiciansydney.com/
There are also heaps of festivals and summer school type things that happen at various times throughout the year...
If you mean *competition* fleadhs, not really. The Comhaltas branches hear are too seperate to really organize such a thing, and each of the active branches (eg. melbourne, canberra, perth) has quite a different style and approach.
The Perth Comhaltas ran an "australasian fleadh" a few years ago on the west coast, but the lack of a national network and the prohibitive cost of flights to perth from out east meant that their was almost no east-coaster participation.
and it sounds like the Aussies were in serious threat of being out-numbered by the large contingent of Japanese musicians and dancers who came over for it.
(i never got over to perth for it but did happen to meet some of the Japanese crew when i was in Tokyo recently. They seem to have had a good enough time, fair play to'm for going all the way to Perrth i say...)
I think the aussie comhaltas' pretty much gave up after that, but every now and then you hear of someone else trying to get another one happening. A representive of Co. Oz may win an all-Ireland title yet! maybe...
yeah sir nose got it one, donough and the others from comhaltas in perth organised a fleadh in 2003, was great fun with John Carty over, ah there were some mighty sesuins!
However it also produced one bodhran player that now thinks he is up there with you ay Sir Nose?! Got any new tips resently from ye man??
By the way thanks a million for those cds of the NFF SamW (got them tonight), they are fantastic -will bring back the memories of playing until the sun came up , Dow would you be able to put the tunes titles up again please??, apprently the other thread got censored!!!!
Yup, I'm kinda p1ssed off about that because I spent a while typing them. Will post them tomorrow. PS how come you have a Thursday track 13? I only have 1 CD for Thurs and it only has 9 tracks. No Windmill??...
Hey Sam, can I get a copy of that CD somehow? I'm still really annoyed that I didn't go to the National (again!) but I'd love to try to learn some of those tunes. The videos on youtube made me very jealous!
Dow, i can look into the CD problem when i get home from work, if you are missing tracks then i can just bring you the remaining tracks on saturday (yeah, ill be in Sydney this weekend i have two priority commitments which preceed everything else but i will still be able to hang out!... and go to mort's party)
kjay_bc_box, i dont anticipate any problems with posting you a copy of the session recordings on CD , though i a probably won't have time til late next week or the week after (like may 9th-15th). If you need the cd's sooner im sure you can make copies from Ado or the Twins (other people who have the cd's in Melb).
Ah there it is indeed! , good find, looking at the ABC file i can see why my advanced searches yielded no results.
eg: {d2 cA GF DF} would have been {d2 cA GFDF} i group quavers in groups of four based on how my recording goes ;)
