Bugle: the Way Forward for ITM?

Bugle: the Way Forward for ITM?

One has an old bugle which one has been polishing up.
One thought one may learn a couple of ITM tunes on it.
It would blend in nicely with the usual instruments down at the session.
One is aware of some resistance to newer instruments by some of you chaps here on this forum but one believes it could be the new bouzouki, kettle drum or dijjereedoooo. And look how they have improved the old ITM in the recent decades!!
The bugle of course has the advantage that one can play it with one hand leaving the other to do all sorts of other things with.

"one can play it with one hand leaving the other to do all sorts of other things"..........like warding off the incoming flying beer mugs?

It would blend so well with the sousaphone, rain-tube and tea-chest bass that finally convinced me to abandon the session at the Wellie in Boscastle in the 90s. :-D

It's even better to have both hands free so you can do other things:

Or maybe not.

There'd be no danger of upsetting Portnapucai by playing in equal temperament.

"one can play it with one hand leaving the other to do all sorts of other things with"

Like play the bones?

Re: Bugle: the Way Forward for ITM?

Actually, in all seriousness, I think a sensitively-played bugle could bring an.....*interesting* new dimension to a slow air - not sure about the jigs and reels. Since airs are played solo, it would be less likely to cause offence to other musicians. It does lack the facility for bending notes, though (unless you count sweeping through the harmonics, elephant style). That's where the trombone comes in handy.

The way *forward*? Sideways, maybe.

Re: Bugle: the Way Forward for ITM?

I always thought it was cool when Deanta dropped a little sax in their sets.

Not sure about the bugle though.

Tell you what, you learn "Minstrel Boy" on that thing and I'll sing it while you play, how's that sound?

Incidentally, I always like a little sax, I mean, who doesn't?

Re: Bugle: the Way Forward for ITM?

Altan put a sax solo in one tune on Blue Idol. It came up on the car stereo as three of us drove home from a session, and the guitarist--who was sacked out in the back seat, dead to the world, or so we thought--startled us by suddenly saying "That sounds really out of place."

But I have wondered how piccolo trumpet--you know, like in Penny Lane--might work on some tunes.

You would certaintly attract attention.

Re: Bugle: the Way Forward for ITM?

I can imagine it doing the odd air like Roisin Dubh, but it would really be in its element pealing out English trad and Northumbrian dag tunes over any ITM session it invades. Perhaps it is capable of those Macedonian things with a limited note range and time signatures in prime numbers, which might make it more acceptable. Has Dervish thought of using one in its Eurovision song (or is that all over now??).

Re: Bugle: the Way Forward for ITM?

I have nothing significant to contribute to this thread, per se, except to mention that at first glance -- tired perhaps by my May Day exertions (q.v.) -- I misread the subject title as "Bulge..." If referring to the bulge that threatens to spill over the top of my belt, I wouldn't be too happy about the "way forward."

Re: Bugle: the Way Forward for ITM?

The only use I can think of for a bugle at a session is if the session is about to close down for good, and someone plays the Last Post right at the very end.

Re: Bugle: the Way Forward for ITM?

don't forget- you can only play four notes on a bugle- D,G,b,d, which is even more limiting for trad then the GHB with its nine notes.

Re: Bugle: the Way Forward for ITM?

I don't know what you mean, Greg - GHB's only 3 notes.

"...you can only play four notes on a bugle- D,G,b,d,..."

Can't you get more notes higher up in the harmonic series?

G, G d g b d' f' g' a' b' ^c'' d''....

In theory, if you went high enough, you could get an uninterrupted chromatic scale. But I'm not a brassist, so I only deal in theory - your lips would no doubt drop off by about f'.

Re: Bugle: the Way Forward for ITM?

In theory, yes, but the tube is so small and narrow that the overtones just can't sound. I can't get the fundamental on my bugle, and can barely get the top G.
