Yes, it is time again for my next jaunt; this time to Moscow, Sept 22 - 30. Does anyone please have directions for sessions or events, or local musicians that I may be able to play fiddle with. Would luurve to learn traditional music as well as play with celtic musicians. Wonder if there are links between old Irish/Scottish and Russian tunes?
I will start searching for Russian folk tunes but if anyone has a favourite that I could learn before I go or general advice on music styles/regions that would be great.
Good time of a day to you, it's great that you're coming
Now, what's *known* to me concerning Irish and Russian folk here in Moscow, it may not completely be true, but anyway.
Irish.
To start with the music I'm really into now...
There's a certain number of folk-or-nearly-so bands, that are said to be playing Celtic music in Moscow. But among all, there're only two or so specializing in Irish ~ taking it relatively seriously and "session-friendly".
Slua Si
Current line-up: vocals+bodhran / vocals+guitar / button accordeon / uilleann pipes+irish flute+tinwhistles
Site: http://irish.ru (in fact their own site is still not ready yet...)
Now, that's our "Irish-to-the-core" band with numerous line-ups in its bio (I've lost the count)) that plays ITM in a way it *should* sound (comparing to others we have here...). Hopefully they're to gain more and more experience and some new members That's really those who CARE and PLAY. There're no records of the new lineup unfortunately, so you shall take a chance to listen to them live.
Later
Current line-up: vocals+guitar / banjo+backing vocals / tinwhistle / accordeon / fiddle / bodhran / bass
Site: http://www.later.ru
Still quite inexperienced in ITM, but nice and lively folk, great fun to play with =) I'm sure they'll get better and better. And I'm sure they'll be happy to join the session...
So, the session.
Unfortunately, there're no real regular sessions among our abstract community of celtic-folk-musicians (although there's been several tries to initiate it on http://tinwhistle.ru, hope the idea will not die out). The main problem is, we do not have that much people who are keen to learn playing ITM, just TINY. The situation seems to be getting better, as new interested folks join in and I hope I'm not being too optimistic about it... But still the only forms of session are meeting to play with friends and playing with those same friends after their concerts And honestly that happens too rarely so far. There're only TWO real irish-style-fiddlers in our country I've heard, one being in St.Petersburg (with her Celtic City Experience band), another is not currently playing - used to play with Slua Si years ago. There're several good pipers I know or heard of, still uilleann is extremely rare here, most being GHB fans;) or gaiteras. The one who's really experienced, who lives with ITM in blood is my friend Sandy The Piper, Slua Si member. He's to be contacted if you're interested further in situation around here. There're certainly some good musicians I don't know, not too many though... We've also one small evergrowing community of tinwhistlers on tinwhistle.ru ;) Not really actively meeting, but still living and advicing newbies all the time!)
Anyway, that's the situation as I see it. And we'll be happy to organise session to play with you, of course! It's a rather rare chance to see genuine folk musician here live, hehe;) So if you learn about some native folks who start meeting around here PLEASE DO TELL =)
Russian.
That's even more sore point as anything concerning national culture... Well there ARE now some bands that appear to play folk as it is unlike some shows or sort of new age/rock/whatever who are playing more or less their *vision* of folk music, not the music itself; there're some famous respected musicians who took part in collecting the music which is disappearing in the countryside... But the problem is, very very few are interested and those are advertised and known even less than our "celtic" bands, I'm afraid. I'm not very helpful at this point really as I'm not familiar with any folks like that. Still most of the population is familiar with some common traditional songs and never heard of any instrumental tradition. There're some dozens of tunes from songs that are known simply to anyone. Surely I can get you some songbook and maybe will find something online straightaway. That would be a very brief introduction to the most "pop" of our folk music, but anyway...
I was playing with Later almost two years ago in the beginning of their folk career, and believe me, these guys are really good in expressing Irish spirit (if you like Pogues =). Now I've been living in Egypt (Dahab) for 1,5 year, so was really out of tune. I'm looking forward to return to Moscow before September anyway, so i hope to restore all my connections with players and may be to start gathering people to make good session (with some program to learn before etc). Let's keep in contact to see what will be in next few month. Cheers.
On the road again... Moscow in Sept.
