Bunyip, I have a source of Welsh hornpipes, some of them for the harp. I can email the ABC code for some of them if you wish. Contact me by email through thesession.org.
hi Bunyip,
Here's the the title and publishing info on a book purchased in Llandudno a few years ago. Blodnau'r Grug - 100 popular Welsh Dance Tunes - The Welsh Folk Dance Society - Andrew Bartholomew, 12 Rookwood Avenue, Llandaf, Cardiff CF5 2NP.
Here's a couple of cds I can recommend: Sweet Harp Of My Land-Robin Huw Bowen - Welsh Guitar-Michael Raven Some of the songs on these cds show up in the book, also. So, it gives you the tunes in case your sight-reading skills aren't well developed. It should be available at/through any music store. You may want to go to the Sain Records website as they specialize in, but aren't limited to Welsh language tapes, cds, dvds, videos, etc. If you can read mandolin tablature there's a section at the Mandolin Cafe website for some traditional Welsh tunes. There's six and I've downloaded them all. It's good to see someone posting about Welsh traditional as the pulse is different from other forms of celtic music and there's not much of a voice in the community at large. There's another website which has folk music from countries all over the world with melodies and words...I'll look for it and post the address when I find it.
Here's a link to some Welsh tunes. I used to know of another source for Welsh tunes, but haven't been able to find it just now. Will let you know if I do.
A quick aside, last night I attended the Tuesday night session at O'Connor's Pub in Phoenix, AZ, & it's run by a lovely Welsh gentleman on flute & whistle, who handed out a Welsh tune at the end of the evening which I quite liked. hee! Never thought I'd see the day....
Aswell as Blodnau'r Grug above also Published by The Welsh Folk Dance Society - Andrew Bartholomew, 12 Rookwood Avenue, Llandaf, Cardiff CF5 2NP is
Cadw Twmpath ( 100 more folk dance tunes)
both well worth getting.
Tro Llaw collected, edited Robin Bowen 200 Welsh hornpipes from the National Library of Wales (printed and Published by National Library of Wales in 1987) Don't know if this is still available.
Y Dawnsiau collection of 87 dances in Welsh , with tunes
( also a few years old )
Llewelyn Alaw 32 tunes from 19th century harpist edited Robin Bowen GWASG TEIRES Aberystwyth 1990
You may want to contact whistle- and flute-player John Good in Phoenix. He fronts a pan-celtic band called Afan, and he plays mainly Welsh tunes. If you'd like his e-mail address, you can find it at the band's website: http://www.geocities.com/dirtyheel/ He's one of the most terrific people I've ever known, and is always willing to help others.
I'm in the process of setting up a webpage for welsh traditional music, similar to this page but not as hi-tech. I'll post the link when my website goes online
Have found a booklet of hymns. 61 in all. The words have both English and Welsh translations and the music is in standard notation. Would certainly be willing to donate it in whatever form would be required. Let me know. Also, a book of hymns written by a man named Will O. Jones. Published in 1923. Maybe they can be made into fiddle tunes? Who knows...
Och aye, it was John Goode who impressed me so much in Phoenix, he is truly a generous man, a great teacher & an amazingly accomplished musician. Good luck!
