TheSession.org search plugins for Firefox 2.0 and IE7

TheSession.org search plugins for Firefox 2.0 and IE7

I have created browser search engine plugins for Firefox 2.0 and IE7 for TheSession.org. There are separate plugins for Tunes, Recordings and Discussions. They can be found here:

http://www.searchplugins.net/pluginlist.aspx?q=thesession&mode=title

Click the "I" to the left of each plugin to install it.

I tested these in both browsers and they work perfectly. They will probably work in Firefox 1.5, but if you are using Firefox, you should upgrade to 2.0 anyway.

If you are not familiar with search engine plugins in these browsers, they are a shortcut method to do a search without having to go to the web site first. You enter your search terms in the dialog box in the upper right corner of Firefox or IE7, choose the search engine by clicking on the little arrow to the left (Firefox) or right (IE7) and clicking on the engine you want to use. The web site, TheSession.org in this case, comes up with the search results.

In TheSession, it takes several clicks to get to a particular search page. Additionally, the cursor is never positioned in the dialog box. That's always chaffed me. These plugins make seaching much easier. I grew weary of waiting for someone else to create them and finally decided to do it myself. I hope you find them useful.

Brilliant. I just tried the tunes plug-in (FF 2.0.0.3) and it works great. Thanks.

Thanks, Deeor. I'm flattered, but must confess that it's my seach skills that were most important. I found a site that creates the code for you as long as you plug in the necessary details. :-)

Nice work. This seems like a useful site, but I'm amazed at its poor usability. Would it really be so hard for them to spell out the word "Install" instead of expecting users to click on a 3-pixel wide "i"? Was their designer charging them per-letter?

Re: TheSession.org search plugins for Firefox 2.0 and IE7

Another quick way to search in FF is to use keywords. Find the search box on the web page you want to use (like the one under Tunes -> Search at this site), right-click it, and choose "Add a keyword for this search...". Then give the search a name (doesn't matter much) and come up with a keyword. After you add that you can use it to search by typing directly into the address bar.

For example I made "s" the keyword for the tune search on this site, so I can type "s trip to nenagh" into my address bar and it will take me straight to http://www.thesession.org/tunes/index.php/search?name=trip%20to%20nenagh&type_id=&mode_id=

You can set up keywords like that for any text box on a web page.
