I saw a picutre of a glass violin and a young lady playing it. Has anyone heard it and what do you think of the sound. It's so beautiful, next time Ifind myself with an extra $50,000.00 I just might buy one.
It immediately makes me think of something rather sinister but at the same time not to be treated seriously...That's because I'm automatically reminded of "Glass Onion", by The Beatles.
I remember an album called The Brass Fiddle with a load of Donegal fiddle players playing the brass yoke. Nice album. Still got it somewhere. Anyone mind of that?
I'm skeptical of the claim: "better timbre" rather depends on your tastes and what sort of timbre you are looking for, no? Still, I love glasswork and that is a beautiful piece of work to look at.
they used to make glass flutes (not those hall ones) in the 1800's. http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/dcmhtml/0011.html . they were supposed to be unremarkable... just as good as any other high quality flute of the day. even still, it'd be fun to have!
Not one of Ted Brewer's http://www.tedbrewerviolins.com/ which are beautiful to look at and to play - maybe if I start asking now Father Christmas will have saved up enough by December!
I'm not sure about a glass flute. Imagine the condensation running down - yeuch!
I saw a solid plastic violin at Elderly Instruments in Lansing, Michigan a few years back. It was playable and sounded better than I would have expected for plastic -- but I wouldn't say it sounded good. Think of a $25 Skylark violin and you'll be close. Waterproof though ;^)

Glass Onion
I've got a ukulele made of sauteéd squid, fairy wings and frankincense, a chocolate and chilli bodhran and an one hole purple pocket trombone.

Re: Glass Violin
You might have a hard time doing your chicken sounds on the glass violin, Mary. Maybe you can have someone make one from chicken wire and straw?

Re: Glass Violin
Yes, there are more pictures on the web if you google search " glass violin china" but my work computer won't let me put a link here. (don't know why)
Looking at that picture the strings look really far apart.
Very interesting.

Re: Glass Violin
I remember seeing one some years ago in the Waterford Glass Museum. It didn't appear to be playable (glass pegs, etc).

You could scotch tape your set list to the back side and always know what was coming next..

Re: Glass Violin
Alternatively, you could tape the set list to your...no, no, that's not a good idea, you'd get a crick in the neck.

Re: Glass Violin
Hi
Has anyone seen the Ted Brewer violins, they look as if they are made of glass but it is resin, it could be one of his.
Good luck

Re: Glass Violin
Have we had Rob Collins' biscuit tin and cigar box mandolins, banjos & guitars on here before?
http://www.tinguitar.com/
Some people I know are working on mass produced plastic guitars and violins. The couple I've looked at don't sound too bad, either.

I just want to know why he's producing violins in a hotel. Don't the staff object?
