Name for a group!

Name for a group!

Our session group plays in pubs and other musicians normally sit in and join us during the night. We never gave ourselves a name but need one now as publicans want to promote their entertainment offerings for the summer season and have asked us to put a name on our group. I thought of 'Skylark' but that's been taken before. Maybe some creative-minded members here might suggest some suitable name for a trad session group (3 members). Thanks.

How about "Lilt" ? Sometimes the answer is closer than you think. :-)

Re: Name for a group!

"The 3 members"?

Or just go for something cliched and cheesy involving shamrocks, pure drop, potcheen and the colour green...

Re: Name for a group!

As there's so much droning on about reading dots over on the other thread, so call yourselves the polka dots. Not very good I know but no worse than some that have come up already.

Re: Name for a group!

We'd get the joke with Polka Dots, but most people would get it all wrong. This is not my invention, but I think it's going spare "Jigs Might Fly".
So bad it's good?

Re: Name for a group!

As groups are often named after tunes, perhaps something like:
Three Sea Captains
Three Merry Sisters of Fate (rather dependant upon the genders of the three members)

Re: Name for a group!

"Hot Whiskey", "Slainte", anything to do with drink, or name it after a tune or song, such as "Fiddler's Green" or "Hewlitt".

We once named ourselves after the tune "Smash the windows" and were well chuffed until the landlord said he couldn't put up posters. True.
Anything that sounds lively. Avoid titles like "The mournful three".

Re: Name for a group!

I like "Jigs might fly". Must use that the next time the tax man forces me to change names.

how about "is not allowed to play" it looks great in posters." Is not allowed to play tonight at gan aim pub"

Re: Name for a group!

Boring, 'safe' suggestion: "Failte"
(assuming it's a welcoming session!)
Most tourists will learn the meaning and pronunciation early in their trip, so it should be OK.

Mind you I like Jigs Might Fly.

Where do you play, lilt? I occasionally foray to Ennis for a session, might look you up!

Re: Name for a group!

Or maybe a variation on seisflutes suggestion :
"The 3 Merry Misters of Fate"

Re: Name for a group!

Many of these are too long, or obscure, or musicians' in-jokes (my paltry effort included.)

You want something short, snappy, easy to remember, and *possibly* but not necessarily, Irish-sounding.
Look at the names of many of the successful bands: Altan, Dervish, Planxty and so on. Just a couple of syllables.
my 2p.

Re: Name for a group!

I quite like "Plankety" or "The Frothy Band".

I once played in an outfit called "The Jimi Hendrix Memorial Céilí Band."

What about "The Cue Tours"
If your in NYC how about "The Sauna in the Cawna!"
Or be boring and go for, as I sometimes use, "Blasta" (It means tasty in Gaelige)

Re: Name for a group!

Great suggestions, everyone! Thanks. I particularly like MTGuru's idea - use my own nick as the name. How come that didn't strike me? 'Jigs Might Fly' is great though. What Key Maniac Lad said makes good sense - short, snappy with just the barest of syllables. We'll get to work on it immediately. Thanks again everyone. RockyRoader, I play mostly in Bofey Quinn's pub and in Brogan's, Ennis during the summer. I'm the one with the flute. Go to YouTube and search 'sessions ennis'. The second clip that pops up (its actually in spanish,it says 'session en ennis') has a big gang of us together. The quality of the clip isn't great as it's very dark but I'm the guy on the near left pumping away for all I'm worth. Come in anytime.

Re: Name for a group!

It's a 10 to 1 cert that whatever you come up with has already been used by someone else - my band shares a name with a Canadian outfit, but there's no confusion because they don't play barn dances and we don't write our own songs.

Re: Name for a group!

Since you live in Ireland you probably get a lot of American tourists who think you have leprechauns flying out of your arse and that you all believe in the little people. To please them, why not call it "Top o' the morning!"

The Merchants Of Ennis is neat or The Merchants Of Menace if you prefer. But I have to agree with KML on the syllables issue, go with what you've decided...Lilt sounds good. What's the latest ads slogans ? I've been away too long. used to be something along the lines "Lilt, so good you wanna blah ,blah"
