Why did they break up?
They seemed like they were going to conquer the Trad World and then stopped recording, touring etc
I still listen to their albums and think they had something special that I havent hear on any band albums since.
I often woondered what their members do now.
Calico just decided to pack in. Diarmid Moynihan is now a teacher in Westport. I played in a session with him 2 years ago in Ennis and told him I really liked Calico and it was a shame they're not doing anything and he was genuinely touched by the appreciation, lovely man. He did a charity run with Brian Finnegan last year.
Cian members play in sessions around Ennis, which is, I think all they ever did.
It's very difficult to make a living as band unless you're prepared to do a lot of touring, which isn't everyone's cup of tea.
Tamalin are hoping to reform I hear from a reliable source (their fiddle -player). They missed the bus in the mid 90's and just didn't have the hunger for success. I wish them all the best when they reform.
Geography may have had something to do with Cian splitting up as Pádraig Rynne (concertina) at the time was based in Galway, Padraic O'Reilly was in Clare and fiddle player, Liam O'Connor was in Dublin.
Padraic O'Reilly and Liam O'Connor were never in Cian!! They had a group called Turas but never did much. Liam was only 13 when they recorded that so it would have been impossible to do anything.
I don't think any of these groups ever had enough about them or a big enough appealing audience to ever reach the heights of Altan, Dervish, Bothy Band or the Chieftains although they are all fantastic musicians.
Bit of a Freudian slip there and I've got a copy of Cian's recording, "Three Shouts from a Hill" ! I have to disagree though that "Turas never did much" as their first CD was a real cracker and Liam's playing even as a young teenager was always outstanding.
I see a lot of similarities between jazz and ITM groups regarding "bands." You might have successful bands that pop up here and there, but the bulk is just combinations of different individuals.
I saw a Chieftains video recently where they talked about how hard it is for any band to stay together. The video showed a Chieftains member having breakfast alone even while they were touring together. They talked about how they really don't hang out together except when they have to (like in the studio and during performance)...... and in that way they can enjoy each other's company without the kinds of hassels that other bands have. I don't know if they're still operating in this way now, but it seems to have been working really well for them.
People who are cut out to be band members are a very small club indeed. In the Trad band scene there are no stars, and very few who can make anthing more than a bare living out of it. I am guilty of slagging off some of them here in the past, most notably Dervish, and I think it's important to remind ourselves that all these people make sacrifices to play for a living and none of them are doing it for fame and fortune.
Mea culpa , and Good luck dervish on May 10th in Helsinki.
I know a guitarist who was thrown out of a rock band that was high in the charts in the '70s because he wouldn't take the drugs. That band probably lost the best lead guitarist they ever had.
Bannerman, I didn't mean that Turas weren't good. I love the CD. I just meant that they didn't do much in terms of touring etc as Liam was young and in school. I know Liam very well. He is an incredible player - technially probably the gifted there is. Even at 13 he was better than many of the leading fiddle players today. I never said he wasn't good. Its unfortunate that he shares the same name as that muppet box player from Kerry!!
I loved Calico. Their line-up wasn't stable - the one time I saw them, in June 2000, Diarmuid, Donncha and Deirdre Moynihan were there, plus Ed Boyd (who plays with numerous bands, including Flook!) and Elma McElligot. Seemed very much a family affair. The venue recorded the show on video.
What happened to these bands?

Re: What happened to these bands?
Not sure about the first two but I'm assuming John and Paul Mc Sherry moved onto better lucrative things, don't you think ?
I have a notion though that they still play together when the opportunity arises.
