St. Louis Tionol

St. Louis Tionol

Is anyone going? I'll be there taking the banjo class from Tom Hall and will be selling a banjo, maybe, to finance the trip.

Mike,

Sadly, I won't make it this year; have a great time! Do you think John Carty will ever be teaching the banjo workshop again?

Re: St. Louis Tionol

John Carty will be at Zoukfest (http://www.zoukfest.com/) June 10-16 this year. I suppose that he will come back to St. Louis some day.

Re: St. Louis Tionol

Hi Mike,

I'll be there. I'm taking the advanced fiddle class. Maybe we'll meet at the session during the long lunch. Do you live nearby or traveling in for the workshop?

Take care,
Larry

Re: St. Louis Tionol

I'll be staying at the Marriot near the sessions. I am sure we will see each other and I'll look for you at the noon session.

Re: St. Louis Tionol

I'm doing something with pipes, I suppose. We're also at the Marriott.

A couple of us will be coming in from Cincinnati again this year. Can't wait for the tunes and the craic to commence!

Re: St. Louis Tionol

Hey Mike, what banjo are you selling? Just curious... I can't afford it anyway (although, I'm in the process of selling a banjo... I could use the money from that... ahh, nevermind...) ;-)

Re: St. Louis Tionol

I have a 17 fret Slingerland MayBelle open back that I refurbished and added one of my bridges. It is a fun banjo to play and much better than the comparable Gold Tone for $350.

Re: St. Louis Tionol

My wife, daughter and I had a big time at the Comhaltas Convention in Atlanta....so we are attending the Tionol as well.

I will bring my dog and pony show.

Re: St. Louis Tionol

Looks like a nice crowd of people who were at Atlanta will also be at the tionol. The convention was great fun, looking forward to St. Louis!

At least there'll be fewer accordions!

Re: St. Louis Tionol

I'll be there as will my splendid wife Min Gates, who will again be taking pix for Mike and the Tionol website. There seems to be a pretty good bunch of Hoosiers (as usual) attending this year also. I know that our Bette Conway (aka Bette Fiddler) will have her jewelry to show in the cafeteria again, and she's donating a lovely Irish coin piece to be raffled off at the Sat night concert to benefit the Tionol.

Like Mike, I'll have some 'trade goods' along...
I have a nice early-20th-century fiddle that I'd like to find a new home for, so it will be for sale there. ... And maybe a Rigel A+ Deluxe mandolin, too.

The instructors roster this year is truly stellar, it should be a wonderfully fun weekend.

Atlantans, oboy! Great! (Are "fewer accordions" a good thing? <GGG>)

Hey, Keith, sorry you can't come, we'll miss you, but we'll well remember, and perhaps visit again, the nice restaurant district you showed us last year.

Hey, Ken, good to hear you'll be there, with some of the Cincy crew, it'll be great to see y'all again.

We're in the 'Hilton at the Ballpark' hotel. I'll be the guy behind the Phil Crump two-point bouzouki (or maybe the small Santa Cruz guitar).

Thanks, all, and all the best,

stv

Re: St. Louis Tionol

Does anyone know who is playing at Mc Gurk's, St Louis during the TionĂ³il (spelling!) and when exactly is it? A bunch of us musicians are heading over to the Smithsonian Folk Life festival this June/July as the north of Ireland is the celebrated region along with the State of Virginia. I will post a fresh thread about this.

Re: St. Louis Tionol

The TionĂ³il is this weekend, April 20-21, ending with a session at McGurks on Sunday morning, the 22nd. Here's their website.

Re: St. Louis Tionol

Dan Cummins recently posted a great piece on the Smithsonian's Northern Ireland features on the Kentucky Irish Trad Yahoo group site, very cool!

Yes, McGurk's is an all-day hoolie of food, friends and music on Sunday. In the past the sessions there have gone from opening til closing time... well... actually, way -past- closing time. <GG>

I hope you can make it to the Tionol!
