I remember the difficulty I had ,when I started on the concertina ,wondering how to accompany songs, after thirty years I must have a repertoire of at least fifty songs,I have now brought out a tutor on song accompaniment on the english concertina, plus a tutor covering ornamentation for irish and scottish tunes. http://www.dickmiles.com/introduction.htm
Hi Dick! How are things in Ballydehob? Seen any sunshine yet this year? Shall we keep stumm about "Jigs Might Fly" in Casey's of Baltimore?
We have quite a few tina-players here in Sydney, but so far I've only heard dance tunes from them, but the sessions I've been to here are much more heavily jig-n-reel (mostly reels) oriented than the music in West Cork. I don't know if they can do songs.
Are you involved in the Ballydehob ITM Fest?
For those who don't know him, Dick has a reputation as a cantankerous old b (I pass no comment on whether or not this reputation is deserved), but I can tell you he is a dab hand at the music he's talking about here.

hello twit, yes the guitar is very useful too,I play oneof those as well.
hi Beamish Boy,glad your keeping well, although ,I dont play jazz,Im involved in the Ballydehob Jazz Festival, may 4 5 6 2007,there is no accounting for crankiness.
having a knowledge of chords, as most guitarists have is useful, however it is better to think of the instrument as being of the organ family, the same right hand techniques,of creating a discord and then resolving it, work quite well.
I had an interesting discussion with lou Killen the other day,I would advise all aspiring english concertina accompanists,to obtain his recordings ,SteveTurners, and myself ,all different but all successful.
This is a huge and perennial topic over on www.concertina.net/forums so you might come have a look at old threads via a search and if still curious, join up and ask about it. I just spent the weekend in Massachusetts and saw sevaral great examples at the Northeast Concertina Workshop. Cheers.
correct,father william.
I have been told, that Steve Turner,is doing a concertina workshop on song accompaniment,at the four fools festival,in standish lancs England.

Nothing useful to comment, other than recognition for an English whenever I can. Aspiring yes - though the years tick by.
