Where to go in Newfoundland for some good Trad?

Where to go in Newfoundland for some good Trad?

This is sort of a shot in the dark, but has anyone here been to Newfoundland? If so, any good music destinations that I should plan to hit…I’m headed up there this summer for my vacation and would be interested in hearing some good music. I’ve heard they have a fairly vibrant scene (heck they have their own kind of music), but I always try to find the better (ie. less touristy) spots before I go anywhere and this seems like the best place to ask. Thanks.

I'm guessing you'll get some input from people who live there. But let me put in a good word for Auntie Crae's (http://www.auntiecraes.com/) Tuesday afternoon session and Folk Night (Wednesdays) at the Ship Pub (http://www.nlfolk.com/folkclub/folkclub.html).

BTW, the reason I'm online at the moment is the terrific Newfoundland traditional band A Crowd of Bold Sharemen is going to be on CBC Radio 2's Internet stream (http://www.cbc.ca/radio2/) tonight -- that's Friday the 13th, starting at 7 PM Eastern (I think). (I'm not sure if this is the lineup with bb's husband or not...)

Get in touch with member "ciansdad" through the site. He's a fantastic box player from Newfoundland currently living out here in sydney. I'm guessing he could put you on the right track.

ciansdad, yes! Just listened to the concert, and it is indeed the lineup with him in it -- first time I've ever really gotten to hear his playing. Should be available from the CBC Radio 2 website for a while yet.

Re: Where to go in Newfoundland for some good Trad?

I'm from Newfoundland.
First of all you must go to George St in St. John's. It has, arguably the most bars per capita than any city on the planet. George street is only a 1/4 mile long.
There'll probably be a couple dozen venues playing traditional music on any given night.

Other than that most towns have their own festivals throughout the summer and traditional music will be heard around the clock, mostly outside. Great Big Sea usually travels throughout NFLD during the summer and highlights many of those festivals.

Re: Where to go in Newfoundland for some good Trad?

Thanks "late", u r really killing me from u know where:)
Aright.... first off, sorry if I sound pretentious, but here's a few hints on tunes around newfoundland. Depends on where you want to be spending your time and how long a holiday you're talking about and, of course, what kind of music you are actually looking for. You can waste hours(days:) on George St and the same goes for the rest of the island, which can take a day to drive across non stop, and find nothing!!
I've searched for tunes players in regions and was disappointed one night and ecstatic the next. Let me know where you are going and maybe I can be of better help.

Re: Where to go in Newfoundland for some good Trad?

Timely thread - I'm heading to the Rock in August, mostly to St. John's and nearby on the Avalon Penninsula. I'm looking for some sessions that are welcoming to those of us who play with more enthusiasm than ability ;) - Sol Foster, do the two you listed qualify?
