Darn, I thought this thread was about a crazy banjo player!
I recently had a guitar nut replaced and shimmed, and I think my luthier's glue of choice was Super Glue (cyanoacrylate). He said it would still be removable in the future if necessary.
You don’t have to use glue at all,the tension of the strings should hold it in place. If you want to use glue use a small bit of carpenters glue.Super glue to me is a little on the strong side and you might have a problem taking it off in the future.
I woud definitely glue the nut. I have bad experience of unglued nuts that have slided away - you need perfect balance between the strings tension to make it work whithout glue.
I have used super glue on my nuts, but any good glue will do. I'm sure that carpenters glue will be just fine.
Lars
Use hide glue as a best source or weakish wood gluet DO NOT use superglue, you only need a tiny dot or two little dots to hold it use the tension from the G and D strings to hold nut in place while glue sets
"You don’t have to use glue at all,the tension of the strings should hold it in place."
Mick - the strings will hold it down, but not necessarily central. Depending on the relative tensions of the strings, it will get pulled to one side or the other. Gluing it in *is* necessary.
I was taught to use cyanoacrylate (superglue) - many luthiers do - but I think it is overkill. Hide glue or a standard wood glue (PVA, Titebond etc.) will do it. It gives you more time to position it accurately, makes it more easily removable and, if you make a mess with excess glue, it's a hell of a lot easier to clean up.
As Red Robin suggests, use the string tension to hold it in position while gluing. You might need to clamp (or tape) it very lightly from the sides, to keep it central.
Spoon is correct, just a drop of standard wood glue is all you need. When the time comes to take the nut out, it can be removed with a blow from the side. A drop of super glue might be OK, too as it has poor shear strength. The main purpose of glueing it in is to make sure that you don't lose it when the strings are loose or off.
I have heard that a lot of people recommend using a touch of Titebond II wood glue. (I think there are three kinds of Titebond; apparently II's the best.)
"You wanna rephrase that Lars"
Yes, I probably would, if I only knew what I've been saying!
This is the problem of not being a native English speaker on a site like this. Most of the time it works just fine, but sometimes you find that you've said something hilarious and some other time that you've offended someone whithout understanding why.
I guess I've been saying something in the line of "have used super glue on my balls"?! I'm sorry for this very serious reply, but I'd really want to know what I appear to have said

Re: Banjo Nut

PS, At least there's no risk of your nuts flying off in the middle of the session

Re: Banjo Nut
I also like to use a bit of graphite on my nuts, to keep them well lubricated.

Re: Banjo Nut
You'll need some lead in your pencil for that.
