Happy Friday 13th

Happy Friday 13th

What's your worst Friday 13th story?

When I was in the 5th grade I was waiting for the school bus and leaned over the bridge railing to look into the creek. I had my books in my arms and.........you guessed it, dropped them in.
THEN I went down the bank of the creek to fish out the books. THEN slid down the bank and fell in.
THEN I missed the bus.
THEN I had to walk home and present myself soaking wet, with dripping book to my mother who had to drive me to school.
(that was the worst part)

Ahhhhh, childhood memories.

Maybe you have some Friday 13th stories regarding your music to share?

Re: Happy Friday 13th

Well ,I had a pretty sh*tty one yesterday actually...Just came back from the National Folk Festival in Canberra Australia....feeling pretty good and inspired.....
I had an argument with the Missus,an argument with the Daughter, had EIGHT loads of washing to do using a semi-automatic washing machine (this took 6 hours).....and after dinner sat down to watch a hired DVD ...Flight 193...about Sept 11 attacks....and what a pile of unadulterated doggy plop it was !!...2 hours of tossy camera work, unintelligable script and very annoying...the day was only redeemed by a herbal cigarette and 3 bottles of home brew after the family went to bed......Friday the 13th...a big poo poo to you ....

Re: Happy Friday 13th

I was in a train wreck (severe derailment) on Friday the 13th. In the middle of Wyoming in the heart of winter. Some ten cars went off the rails and several were tore up pretty bad. Nobody was too seriously injured, which was pretty amazing considering the damage.

I met my wife in that wreck, so it turned out to be one of the best moments of my life. Ten years and four kids later, we're very happy.

Re: Happy Friday 13th

I'm glad that something very good also happened for you Tao Cat... I was beginning to get worried there for a moment.

Is there another reason for this superstition besides the fact that Jesus died on a Friday due to an info leek from the 13th apostle?
Or did I get this all wrong?

Re: Happy Friday 13th

Sorry, morning star, you are all wrong. Funny thing is, its kinda the inverse. The superstition comes from the fact that in the 12 century the Catholic Church issued orders to be opened at the same time all over Europe. These orders were to find and prosecute anyone deemed a heretic by the Church. Instructions on how to determine this were published in a book called the "Malificus Malificarum" (spelling is prob. wrong,) or "witches hammer". The plan was extremely successful, and thousands died. The date was Friday, October 13. Later this plan would come to be known as the Inquisition.

Re: Happy Friday 13th

According to the fount of all knowledge Wikipedia (all hail) the association of Friday and the 13th as a day of bad luck is not documented before the early 20th century, though urbanlegends.com says it was known in the late 19th.

Re: Happy Friday 13th

Yes ... I read that Wikipedia article too. Acoording to that, both morning star and rob_handel are right, in that they're both *suggested* origins of the superstition. Other sources mention one or both of those. And it's worth remembering that the unlucky nature of the number 13 predates Christianity. I've sometimes wondered if the symbolism of the Last Supper derives *from* this, rather than the other way round ...

Anyway, what's this got to do with music? Are there any Friday 13th tunes - jigs, reels?

Re: Happy Friday 13th

I Am not an authority on this subject but I have read many references to the Friday 13th being the day the French throne with Papal backing went to round up all the Knights Templar. Something about them getting too powerful. Their boss was apparently tortured and some say that the cloth that was put over him bears the imprint of his face and this came to be known as the Shroud of Turin.
I'm off to a music festival today so as long as I get there in one piece and I get the tent up in one piece it should be a good one - famous last words!!!

Re: Happy Friday 13th

The Last Supper and Knights templar theories are well known. There is also a Norse legend that the gods were having a feast in Valhalla and that the god of mischief,Loki, gatecrashed the party and tricked Hod,the blind god of darkness to shoot Baldur, god of happiness, with an arrow.Baldur died and the world was plunged into darkness.

Chaucer,The Canterbury Tales,"The Nun's Priest's Tale"......
"and on a Friday fil al this meschaunce"

Legend says that Eve gave Adam the apple on a friday.

Thirteen was sometimes called "The Devil's Dozen"
Is that why the multiplication tables stop at 12?

Re: Happy Friday 13th

One friday the13th I was sitting in the pub with the O.H. and saying wouldn't it be nice to find an old fiddle in a charity shop, and sure enough, we found an old fiddle in a charity shop !
It didn't look like much and it was in a hell of a mess with the back hanging off, but all the bits were there, so I decided to part with £25 for it. Once it was glued back together and restored to it's former glory, it turned out to be a nice instrument. I think it's eastern european in origin, and although it's nothing special to look at, it does have a nice tone and holds its own against much more expensive instruments, even to the point of sounding better than some of them.....I call it my cursed gypsy violin! (when I looked at the sales receipt I'd bought it at 3.33 pm.)....Spooky Huh?

Re: Happy Friday 13th

"Malleus Maleficarum" was written in 1484, long after the Inquisition was established in Roman Catholic Europe (c12/13).

Re: Happy Friday 13th

I am severly triskedecaphobic (I think I spelled that right). I try not to think about it on the 13th of any month, and especially on Friday the 13th. I don't like to drive the car at a speed that is any multiple of 13, I won't get out of bet at 13 after the hour so I won't ruin my day, etc.
So much for being a modern man of reason, eh?

Re: Happy Friday 13th

I'm not the least bit superstitious, but I find it convenient to remain in bed on Friday 13th so as to avoid unlucky events perpetrated by, or associated with, other people who may be superstitious.

Re: Happy Friday 13th

Incidentally, 13 is also the 5th LUCKY number, the 6th prime and the 7th Fibonacci number. It is also the hypotenuse in the second-smallest Pythagorean triple (5-12-13). The smallest is 3-4-5. There are 13 Archimedean polyhedra, and 13 dual Archimedean polyhedra.
Funnily enough, 13 is actually a very lucky number in Jewish lore, because it is the gematria of "Echad", the Hebrew for "one".

Also, the rocket Apollo 13 exploded in space on the 13th April 1970. The launch date was 11/4/70, and 1+1+4+7+0= yes, 13.
And lastly, the time the rocket was launched was - you guessed it - 13:13.

(I'm reading this all out of a book, by the way.)

Re: Happy Friday 13th

Today. I was headed for the CCE North American convention (just down the highway in Atlanta) and my van's transmission seized up. 3338 miles out of warranty. Fortunately, I was able to roll into a service station instead of crapping out on an interstate highway at 80mph (in a 55mph zone, but that's how they drive in metro Atlanta). $2500 minimum. Wah.
