Re: Don't miss gradam cheoil tonight

Thanks TraLad - definitely one not to miss. I've lifted some details off the Internet which I've pasted below just to give some idea of what's in store.

Top prize in the TG4 Gradam Ceoil Awards 'Musician of the Year', goes to Liam O’Flynn from Kildare who has long been regarded as one of Ireland’s most influential uilleann pipers. Other Award winner's include young musician of the year, Mayo’s Fiachna O’Mongain, with fiddler Paddy Cronin designated for the Hall of Fame (Gradam Saoil), Jim McGrath as composer of the year and Dara Ban Mac Donnachadha as singer of the year and Ciaran Mac Mathuna receives the Gradam na gCeoltoiri Award for his media role in spotlighting traditional Irish Music.
Kildare man, Liam has been a member of some of the most influential traditional music groups including Planxty and has also performed specially commissioned orchestral suites such as Shaun Davey's The Brendan Voyage, The Pilgrim and The Relief of Derry Symphony to national and international acclaim. He is acknowledged as Ireland's foremost exponent of the uilleann pipes and has brought the music of the pipes to a world-wide audience.
The TG4 Gradam Ceoil Awards, considered to be the foremost recognition given to traditional Irish musicians, took place on Easter Sunday, April 8, at the Cork Opera House to mark the 10th year of the much-coveted and prestigious prizes. Along with Liam special guests for the night will include Paul Brady, Danu, Sean Keane, Jackie Daly, West Ocean String Quartet agus go leor eile.

Re: Don't miss gradam cheoil tonight

Jackie, Paddy Cronin and Donal O'Connor played a couple of great slides together. I didn't manage to video it so would greatly appreciate if anyone could name them so that I could track them down. This was a fantastic programme of material that should feature regularly on the airwaves rather than the mediocre pop we're continually subjected to on shows like the "Late Late" and "Tubridy" just to name two.

Weren't Danú brilliant and Muireann's Port na Búcaí slow air. I also enjoyed the Fermanagh music from Jim McGrath and friends who proved that good new compositions can hold their own with any of the old ones.

Well done TG4 !!

Yes a lovely programme, and to you out there who missed it, it will probably be available in the music archive (ceol-cartlann) one of the nearest days. Danu, O'Flynn, Cronin, McGrath with friends sounded great as expected.

Young Musican of the year, box-player Fiachna O Mongain was a highlight to me, because I had never heard of this guy and had no expectations. Do he have any recordings? I belive we will hear lots from this guy in the future
