Am I just doing something wrong or can I not search and type fada (acute) accents on this site, they always just become boxes? If I can't, I think it's pretty sad that thesession can't handle accents as they are part of MANY names. Sadly I only know most tunes by their Irish names and the boxes instead of fadaí make it difficult :( [bhuel, braitheann sé, níl ach na ainm Gaelach agam, ach tá siad na fíor-ainmeacha, i m'intinn, agus is brea liom iad!]

Re: fada

I see accents all over the site just fine, including your comment above.

What Browser? OS? Language? Default character encoding? More info would be helpful.

Re: fada

I have never been able to find the shortcuts for accents etc. on this keyboard. I get all my hooks, lines and circumflecks from the character map.

Re: fada

Any computers I've ever used give fadas by using the "alt" key and the character although some of the earlier PCs needed an additional key (memory's a bit rusty now but I think it was "alt", "shift" and character).

Re: fada

Funny you should bring this up, I found this site yesterday.
http://www.tedmontgomery.com/tutorial/ALTchrc.html
It's working for me on one email account but not on another and it works in word - I haven't a clue why. Would the computer geeks out there to explain html coding or whatever it is? Ahem.. in plain English please. ☺

Re: fada

For anyone using Windows XP, it's a simple simultaneous pressing of 'alt' and 'control' plus the letter in question, e.g. áíéóú, plus the shift key if you want capitation - ÁÉÍÓÚ.

Hmm, that doesn't work for me, and I'm on a very new computer running Windows XP. If I hold down Ctrl+Alt+a I don't get anything.

Re: fada

Seeing other people's accents correctly depends on everyone having their browsers set to use the same character encoding. Unicode (UTF-8) is a good one that lets you see every character in every language, and a lot of the newer OS's use it by default, so if you're having problems, try setting your browser's character encoding to Unicode (UTF-8).

As for typing, if you're running Windows and your computer has a numeric keypad, you can type accented characters by setting the numeric lock, and typing (on the numeric keypad, not the numbers at the top of the keyboard):

Alt+0225 for á
Alt+0233 for é
Alt+0237 for í
Alt+0243 for ó
Alt+0250 for ú

Subtract 32 from those numbers to get the capitals.

Re: fada

Thanks for the clear explanation McBriss UTF-8.

Re: fada

what about if you have a laptop with no numeric keypad?

Re: fada

You'll still have numbers on the typewriter part, just above the qwerty line. They are the same numbers. Go for it. In fact those are "WORD" encodings, but Microsoft compatible software *should* do the same thing.

Re: fada

Sorry, doesn't work.

Re: fada

incidentally, if you happen to be fortunate enough to be using an apple, you just type opt+e and then the letter you want the fada over.
