OT: Need advice about shipping a flute to Mexico... please help.

Hey folks:
I'm just about to move down to Mexico for the next six months or longer, which is awesome, except that my keyed Grinter is going to be done about three weeks after I move down there. So I've got a dillema - do I have Michael hold onto the flute until I return to the US, or do I have him ship it to me down in Mexico?
Do any of you have experience shipping valuables to and from Mexico, Central America or South America (yes, I know Mexico is North America)? What service did you use? Was it safe? How much did it cost? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Best,
Chris

Chris, no advice on the actual shipping I am afraid, but if it were my flute, I would just wait until I got back to the US. I am sure you're busting to play it, but better safe than sorry. I won't even leave my old antique Bark in the car on its own if I'm going to be stopping off somewhere for more than 5 minutes. Where I go, it shall follow, except by mail. Or ship it to me and I'll play in in for you!!

Just don't do like my husband who ordered a surprise flute from Ireland for a Christmas gift to me...set to arrive here while he was out-of-state. I didn't know...and he had it sent regular mail. It sat out in a broken mailbox in the south Louisiana monsoons for a few days. Only a miracle from God kept it from being stolen or ruined, and therefore, saved my dear man's life.

I've spent time all over Mexico, and would never have a flute or valuable item shipped to a third world country such as Mexico....as an American you loose all your basic rights we all take for granted.....no one down there is going to give a flying f*** about your flute if it gets lost...I hope i'm not offending anyone, but I've been burned more than once in Mexico (no pun intended)...

Well, be careful down there....even in those flashy tourist resort towns, you can end up sitting in jail for no reason except that you are an American with some cash....and I'm not joking....

Si, los gringos, vamos a robar sus flautas e meterlos en las cadenas.

On the other hand, flute makers ship flutes every day, even to the place that has the worst, most corrupt, most not-give-a-f***-about-your-flutes post office in the world: Chicago! And most of the times, things arrive just fine.

Maybe you could use an alias, so they wouldn't know you're an American. :-) Something unconspicuous, like Emiliano Zapata, or Sancho Pança should work best.

Or maybe just have him send it registered and insured.

Joyce, did you spend time or "do" time all over Mexico? ;-)
