I had my money saved up and ready to pull the trigger on a hohner double ray yesterday, when my lovelife hit me with a brick wall.
My girlfriend of two years and I are splitting up, and now I'm forced to use the cash I'd saved up towards a deposit and moving fees and such.
Bitching and moaning aside, does anyone here have a lead on a decent used box, or have a beater that they'd be willing to sell? I can spare some money right now, but not the $850 I had all scraped up for the Hohner. There's just a damned drought on eBay right now. Any words on that cheapo lark in the morning box so far? I've got an itch to play, and no way to scratch it.
How does that help? The cheapest instrument on the list costs only $28 less than what devinomatic says he can't afford. Unfortunately, I can't help either.
You're right, I've checked the Button Box site and politely emailed them twice in the past 3 weeks with no response. They certainly have the lowest prices here, but no desire to sell it seems. Due to current events, it's a little steep for me.. I'm probably bound to maybe $600 max. :/
Are you a member of the Irishbox group on Yahoogroups? Boxes come up for sale there from time to time, and just last week someone offered an Irish Dancemaster B/C that he had paid $850 for when new. As of three days ago it was still available. Maybe his asking price will still be too high, but in any case, it would be worth your while to start getting emails from the group. If you sign up for full access with a Yahoo ID (as opposed to email-only access) you can view the message archives on the web.
-I'd suggest telephoning Button Box and asking for Doug. They have enough going on that e-mails may not get an instant answer. I e-mailed them recently with a tech question, then telephoned soon after, impatient for an answer. They acknowledged the e-mail but hadn't had time to reply in the short time given. My question by phone was answered immediately, and their advice solved the problem handily.
-A call will also determine if they have stock of interest to you which hasn't been posted yet. Their stock list gets periodic updates but may not show stock which has arrived or become ready for sale between updates.
-I'm sorry to learn of your domestic disarray and its demands on you. Perhaps finding the right box will cheer you. Hang in there!
If you can find a cheap Hohner on Ebay, I've seen them go as little as 200 US, Michael of Irish Dancemaster can also retune these with Italian Reeds to your preferred key for a good price. I'm looking at having my first little Hohner(CF-yuck) to C#D.
there's a double ray down in Albequerque NM on their craigslist -- I was considering it but was a little shy of dealing with the shipping -- he was asking $550
Many thanks for the suggestions everyone. I found a great little vintage grey pearl Pokerwork around the $450 mark. Hopefully it'll be the launchpad into a lifelong addiction to playing ITM!

Thanks in advance, everyone.

If it were me,
I'd move in with a woman who plays b/c box.
