Hi all,
I'd like to know how a chieftain low F measures...more or less.
I've got a susato low D, and the holes are too far for my fingers!
Is the F low whistle a bit shorter?
Thanks
The reach on most F Whistles is less than on most low D whistles. I had a Chieftian which I sold probably 1 year and a half ago and the reach was easier than a Low D but it was still on the far side. I now have a Burke which is pretty easy to reach and the last hole can be rotated to make the reach even easier, an optional offset. You may want to look into makers that offer offset holes like Renaldo Reyburn.
If you play with G fingering on an F whistle you get Bb. A fingering gets you C. You can play in Dm - Bm fingering. You can not play in D though - at least without being a real empressario as you would need to get rid of the Bb note and add a C sharp and F sharp - *This keyboard appears to be missing a hash symbol - how useless is that!!*
I am not saying not to buy the F whistle - I am after one myself (MK whistles now make an F!). Do not use it as a replacement for the D though as you will not be able to join in on 90% of the tune sets. It is useful for those tunes in non-D whistle friendly keys though and for lots of songs.
I have one of Colin's F whistles & love it. The reach is easier than a Low D. Have you tried a G whistle? It is good for playing in the keys of G, C, & D.
F Low Whistle? Buy it or not?

Re: F Low Whistle? Buy it or not?
Well, it ought to be. And you can also play things on it in C, and D at a stretch, using what would be fingering for A on a D whistle.

You can play in Bb on it when a tune occasionally crops up in that key.

Re: F Low Whistle? Buy it or not?
Apart from the tuning, I think the F whistle is very nice. It's like a middle or medium whistle and it sounds really well (especially the chieftain).
There's a lot of players who play it!
