With respect to the *best* height for the fingers above the fingerboard, I was wondering what advice other players may have regarding this. Personally, I find that to get crisp, clean grace notes (rather than rolls), I find I have to keep my fingers well off the fingerboard. It's been suggested to me, by a good player, that I should try to minimise the height of my fingers above the fingerboard - but when I try to do so, my grace notes become less articulate. Has anyone any suggestions/comments regarding this?
I prefer lower - for accuracy and speed but sometimes I lift higher - usually when I want to attack a particular note. If it helps you articulate ornaments, then it works for you and there's nothing wrong with it

Why not lift low for the regular notes, but lift high before swinging down for a grace note?
