In the past I have used ABCTools to make a cheat sheet (list of tune names and first couple of bars). I can't get it to work now and the link to the author's site is broken so I can't obtain a fresh download.
Has any one got a source for the programme or a suggestion of an alternative please?
I made an index for my tunebook, and I can find any tune quickly using it. Reels, then jigs, then slip jigs, etc.
I wrote out the first measure and organized them according to the first note of the first full measure; for example, reels starting on low D; then reels starting on low E; reels starting on F#, etc. At our learner's session, I can listen to the beginning, hear what kind of tune it is and what the first note is, then look it up. I like to keep the book on the floor and peek if I need to.
My cheat sheet is in Xcel. I just paste the abc into one of the columns. The other columns are name, key, whether it's a jig, hornpipe or whatever, and a number indicating how confident I am to play it unprompted. It's easy to sort, by different columns if you want. It goes against the grain to boost Microsoft products, but the thing works. Why fix it?

Re: How to make a Cheat Sheet?
I'd use a pocket notebook and pencil. More reliable.

You can always download OpenOffice.Org2.2 which has a good spreadsheet facility.
Thanks for all the help folks.
