This is something I don't offer in a workshop setting that often (maybe once per year, if that). It's been awhile since I held one of these here at my home outside Winchester. This is material that you will probably not find being taught ANYWHERE (outside of private instruction), that I know of.

Previous Rhythm/Chord Workshops were one-day affairs running about 6 hours in length, but I feel the need for additional class time to really impart the ideas and ties the threads together. (Ideally, this should be a week-long camp). Some of the topics:
- "The basic principles of groove"
- Blues guitar, piano and organ Riffs (for mando) and grooves
- Funk voicings, strums, riffs
- Walking 3-note Chords and Walking Doublestops (swing, r&b)
- Chuck Berry style Rock & Roll Shuffle (and variations)
- Rhythm guitar type strums (rock n roll derived)
- Bass lines and harmonized bass lines
- Extended and altered chords; chord substitution
- call & response, stop time
- right hand techniques, pick+fingers, muting.....
- pedal tones, drones for Celtic backup and/or "heavy metal"
- celtic style backup (lots of arpeggios and "implied melody")
- ideas/techinques borrowed from Cajun second fiddling
- intro to "Clawhammer mando" (emulates old-time frailing banjo)
- and of course, some ideas on the "chop"

The hours of the workshop have been scheduled in such a way to better accomodate those who may have to drive 5-6 hours to attend, so that only Sat. night motel stay is needed. The 10am start on Sunday is a concession to those who may be commuting within a 1-2 hour radius, while the 4pm wrap-up provides enough time for everyone's return drive.
