I can't submit a request for a tune cos the tune is already here on the session but crucially (to me anyway) a large part of it is incorrectly transcribed. "Learn it by ear" I hear the cry-but my wooden ears aren't clever enough to transcribe a melodeon playing at warp speed 10. What do I do? The tune is The British American Polka part 3,by the way, and I ain't got any slow down software, being an IT illiterate. This is a discussion, honest! Help!!
I am unsure what you are asking here, finding it unclear. I've done a search and there is nothing on this site called "British American Polka" ~ not part 1, 2 or 3??? I think you need to tell us more. You also say it is "incorrectily transcribed" ~ you do know there is generally no one pure way with any of these tunes don't you?
Then you mention what I take as a recording you would like to transcribe, and maybe to add here? If so, be clearer, tell us exactly. There are loads of folks here that can help and would probably be willing to. IF you have problems with notation, dots or ABC's, the help can be found. If it is a specific recording, well, even there, you could always send the digital recording to a willing member and they could transcribe it for you and add it.
What is the tune? ~ give the link, or the exact title... Help!?
You could always download an Abc player, paste the Abc notation in and learn by ear from that.
It gives you control over exactly how slowly the tune is played.
What kind of computer do you have? Where do you have the song?
If you've got a PC (with Windows Media Player) and the song is an MP3 or on a CD (you can rip it to MP3), all you need to slow it down is the built-in 'Enhancements' in WMP.
Start the tune and switch to the Now Playing view, then use the menu to get to the Enhancements ... cycle through the enhancements until you get to the one titled Play Speed Settings. You can use the slider to slow the tune down (without changing pitch!
Dubblestop - is the recording you're referring to this one by David Munnelly? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZcUbnwOIng&mode=related&search=
It's an interesting version of the tune, but the third part seems to be different from what I've heard before (though the tune is being played so much faster than I've ever heard it's hard to be sure). Could you submit it as the BAP, Munnelly version, or something, and link to the other version?
Yeah, thats the one,Spin. My frustration stemmed mainly from being unable to request a tune,or part of it, cos it was here already though not in the form I wanted it. I did try the guvnor's hyperlink(?) but drew a blank. I suspect that the transcription here is not far away from the Carignon or Cutting version. Its probably my ignorance of the fiddle/melodeon technique being employed to obtain the sound thats the root of the problem. I am bound to admit, though, that I straightened up some of the errant parts of the transcription here-parts of the first bit and the feel of the second bit-BY LISTENING TO THE LP!! The 3rd part eludes me unfortunately. Thanks for the response anyway.
Hi Pippa,I've seen that Munnelly Band version and thats played even faster than the Cutting/Woods and Jean Carignon takes! The lads look like they're enjoying themselves though. If I knew the tune I would submit it. Wonder where they got their transcription from? Oh, woe is me.
Sorry ceolachan, I should have said that I've two recordings of this tune(called the American Polka here)-one is by Jean Carignon on an old LP entitled Down Home-its got Aly Bain and others on it. The other is the Cutting/Woods gem of a cd with Castignari on the cover. Oh well, back to the woodshed.
I take it that it's the Cutting/Woods take you want a transcription for. I could help you with the Jean Carignon take, but I haven't access to the Cutting / Woods CD, sorry...
Yes to other comments, that way of the David Munnelly band, whew! Where's the fire, eh? They are talented, but you'd have strokes on the dance floor at that much of a rip... I am that impressed with them I'd love to hear them at dance tempo to check out better their ways with it... Can't say I could enjoy it completely that ripped up...
Yes, that would be cool dinn2, you could add it in the 'Comments' for the transcription already here. I could do that for the Jean Carignan take and then dubblestop could cut and paste and add it into the converter at Concertina.net for the notes... What is it they call it? ~ The Tune-O-Tron:
I'll ask around to see if I can get my hands on the Cutting / Wood track to transcribe... It may be awhile though, May, as I'll be away for most of April...
Have to say I'm humbled by the 99% positive response I've had to my whinging-it's this bleeding wooden box with wire bits that drives me to begging letters! ceolachan,I think the Carignon take is almost the same as the Cutting /Woods effort but somewhat different to the Munnelly band if only in tempo-at least in part 3. Thanks for taking the time...Why do I torture myself like this! mutter,mutter...
If you have windows media player go to the David Munnelly Website click on music and listen to the slower tempo playing and slow iw down using windows media......Is there anything more i can do
I grabbed the YouTube audio and MP3-ed it. If it is clear enough and I can get a decent enough transcription from it I'll add it in the comments. In the meantime I'll try to get the Carignan recording for it...liking his take and way on most things....
Hey,dinn-tried your instructions and a whole new world of slow tunes just opened up-I need to get out more! Thanks. Unfortunately part 3 of the tune isn't on the sound clip but no matter I'm playing and listening, playing and listening in my head and I can feel the birth pangs-with the help of youse music midwives I think I'm gonna give birth to a version that feels satisfactory to me-maybe not at Munnelly speed but its starting to hang together-think all the notes are actually here in the transcribed version-its my technique that needs a boot up the arse! Wish I'd started at 12 and not 40. Felicitations to y'all.
Jeremy, thanks for the advice but as the tune was submitted in 2004 I don't think I'd have got the same response to my crie du coeur if it had been buried in the comments section there-I'd still be weeping into my beer. As it is with great support from those above, apart from that illigitimate bloke, I've been inspired to bottom this tune out-hope I don't get struck off-I love this website, warts'n'all.
And I might have missed it, though I'd have eventually got back around to it again. I have now added the several alternate titles for it I'd found online and elsewhere, which has allowed the link-ups to the recordings in the 'Details' for the tune, now rather than later thanks to dubblestop's query...
You can call me Ben. (Don't care what I call you ... though it would be nice to meet up for a tune or two some day ... maybe bring a drop or two of something as part recompense for those non-arriving goods )
I will keep trying. I've tried the link above, which I can't get to work at all. I'm currently trying via a direct search on YouTube, but that doesn't seem to be playing either - though at least I get to the part which a shot of the stage.
I also tried the link to the David Munnelly website - good quality on there, but, of course, only a very short sample, so not the whole tune ...
Wow! Someone else posts their frustration ... and now *I'm* frustrated as well!
Just to clarify: the newest comments are visible on the "comments" tab in the tunes section. So even if the tune was submitted in 2004, your question would be instantly visible.
