Canberra - Easter

Canberra - Easter

So who is going to be there for the Festival?
Any ideas for meeting up for a session without going around wearing the Session.org logo adorned on a t-shirt :) ? - yeah I do have one.
There is a reasonable contingent coming over from the West on the midnight red-eye flight early Thursday morning.
If no-one replies, I guess I'll just hang around the session tent.
We've just had a musical feast over here with Paddy Keenan first and now Kevin Burke/Ged Foley who are doing one more concert here tonight before heading over East.
Ged Foley's guitar was lost by Virgin so he had to borrow my Guitar for the first two nights and hopes to have his own back by tonight for the last concert.

Re: Canberra - Easter

Its the session Bar Donough - no tents for us:)

I'm going, Sirnose, Dow, Kenny, Late in the Evening and all the usual crew:) We dont need to wear the t-shirts - we've all met.
...except Kenny -but Dow has met Kenny so he knows what he looks like.

Re: Canberra - Easter

I thought the session bar was a big tent!!
Any word from ConĂ¡n?
Thanks bb; I'm going to bring the fiddle as well as the guitar not that I have enough tunes yet on the little beast. I'm making progress though. I promise to try and learn the flooded road to Gl.

Re: Canberra - Easter

I'm looking forward to a few tunes meself at the Nash. Sometimes the session bar looks like a huge tent blowing in the breeze, especially after a few bevvies.

Re: Canberra - Easter

Good idea Donough, I can only put a few faces to names and of course there will be sessiondotorgers there who are not part of "the usual crew".
I would like to meet as many of you as possible, so if you happen to be passing my bodhran tent please drop in and introduce yourself by your session.org name.
This especially applies to SirNose, as I have something special to show you. (see, I do know someone!)

Re: Canberra - Easter

I'll be there, Donough, and have even very cleverly organised a work meeting on Thursday so the company will pay for my petrol down and back. :-)

Niamh's cousin will come too but will probably stay "at home" most of the time as she's not primarily a strummer and I don't (yet?) play backing. Maybe there can be a meeting of the Worthys sometime. Will have fiddle but ... I worked at it for 18 months or so when I first got it, but had to give it and a few other things away for a while while I dealt with other stuff and am just getting back into it. So you'll be a way way waaaaay better fiddler than me!

Re: Canberra - Easter

Oh yes, and our company makes us fly Virgin for work travel (edict laid down by a bathplug of a purchasing manager the week before she resigned, may the fleas of a thousand elephants infest her armpits) and all I can say is that I would fully expect them to lose a guitar.

Re: Canberra - Easter

Donough - when it's not the Session Bar - the Session Bar is known as the Harness Racing Club and is the bar/basement of a grandstand and hosts a TAB, dozens of TV screens, awful beer stained carpet and 'the trot's' every Friday night. Over Easter the TV''s get covered up, strange things get stuck to the ceiling and the TAB miraculously disappears and becomes the bluegrass players nook!

The Budawang (big concert venue) has another life as The National Tally room! God forbid anyone ever call an election to fall on Easter! There are some tents and hoekkers around.....but the National is not so tenty as many others for venues! (Which everyone appreciates should a miracle occur and it rain!).

This newbie fiddler is probably gonna watch you guys all play, and then go pretend to be indispensable behind the scenes somewhere for most of the festival. Work/life and my mechanic stealing my car for the past 9 weeks mean that my lessons and practice went out the window! Ah well.....

Re: Canberra - Easter

Hi folks - look out for a black t-shirt with either "Copenhagen Irish festival" [ thanks, Mich ], or "McLean's Music Bar, Taybank Hotel, Dunkeld" written on the back. I'll be inside it, probably with a flute sticking out the top. See you there.

Re: Canberra - Easter

Thanks for all the responses - this is going to be bigger than Ben Hur.
I think I might bite the bullet and bring my White SessiondotOrg sweatshirt - I've only worn it a couple of times in the past two years or so! If its not too hot I'll stick it on for the Thursday evening.

Re: Canberra - Easter

CurvyFiddle, you'll probably have company for at least part of that.. ;-)

Re: Canberra - Easter

The guy with the disintegrating baseball hat and looking gloomy is Dow, alias Mark... :-(

Re: Canberra - Easter

I used to have a yellow and white session.org raglan, and I wore it lots and the logo faded off, and then I wore it some more and the material got all thin and developed holes, and I still wore it, and then I couldn't anymore so I chucked it.

Re: Canberra - Easter

Donough - Too hot? Har har....granted its been warmer than usual the last few years - but by warmer I mean 4degs at night as opposed to the time it got to -7 and we had to scrape ice off the windshild with our credit cards! And you live in perth...I'm sure your jumper will come in handy!

Re: Canberra - Easter

So ... do most folks have a plan for Thursday night? Anyone going to the opening concert? Or does everyone just descend on the session bar?

# Posted on March 30th 2007 by Tish

Re: Canberra - Easter

... or has everyone left town already? ;-)

Re: Canberra - Easter

It's been 'nippy' the last few nights....anyone from north of Sydney and/or coming from WA - pack layers!

And it hasn't actually gotten to -7 at the festival during the last 9 years.....but there have been three lots of -5 nights. About 5 years ago that put the ice on so thick that someone scratched into their rear window "this festival's just too cool". Jan Nary (publicist) and the Canberra Times photographers had a great time with that one!

DO bring a warm/weather proof coat. Though the forecast from BOM (Bureau of Meterology) is for maximums of 20-24 all week and overnight lows of 9 and for it to be fine mostly sunny and clouding up over the week. (Cloudy actually usually means warmer at night here).

Re: Canberra - Easter

Nipply? I shall bring rum and a heater, thanks Curvey. Are you already there?

Re: Canberra - Easter

I wanna see pictures... Please!

Re: Canberra - Easter

Nippy? Nipply? Same thing. I guess it just depends on your gender and how thin your t-shirt is.....?

Am I already there? Sort of mcknowall. I live in Canberra. My mum is one of the motorhomers taking care of the gates and is camped there now. My 14 year old son is one of the ticket office volunteers.....and I tried to escape and left the employ of the festival 16 months ago to go do something else and only managed to make it 200 metres away in a different office in the same arts complex........so I've managed to dob myself in for being guard dog to one of my former colleagues herding the cats known as performers.

For those who have never been before....a warning!
It's one of those things: Once you've been. You ALWAYS come back! **** Twilight Zone music plays....or Jaws.....or Psycho**** ..............

Re: Canberra - Easter

Love the gatekeepers! Very welcoming, much like visiting grandma's as a child except I'm their age now (almost)

Re: Canberra - Easter

OK guys thanks for the weather alert
It's been reasonably warm here until the last few days so its easy to forget what Canberra can be like in Autumn.
I think I will go to the opening concert just to support my mates in the David Hyams band but otherwise I will spend Thursday in the Sesssssion Barrrrrr - feeling cold already
What's the instrument lockup situation like??

# Posted on April 1st 2007 by Donough

Re: Canberra - Easter

I'm interested in the lockup setup too.

I suppose the session bar opens well before the concert starts?

# Posted on April 1st 2007 by Tish

Re: Canberra - Easter

Lock up was just behind the session bar in a tent last year and is usually open till Midnight - which is just great I reckon.

# Posted on April 2nd 2007 by bb

Re: Canberra - Easter

The lock-up is the back half of the Quokka Pavilion adjacent to the session bar (and Mcknowall's Bodhran Pavillion!)
