As I'll be travelling to Sligo in May (with a group of students), could anyone tell me where there are nice and friendly sessions going on in Sligo? (Saturday to Wednesday)
My husband plays the guitar, I play the flute, so we wouldn't mind if it was a visitor friendly session where we might join in for a few tunes.
You could contact the Coleman Music Centre in Gurteen (details are shown at http://comhaltas.ie/locations/detail/coleman_irish_music_centre/). Gurteen is only a small village but is a great centre for the tradition - The Róisín Dubh pub run by Ted McGowan has some great sessions and veteran flute player, Peter Horan plays there frequently.
Hi! As somebody told you, Sligo is a busy place por sessions. I usually go to:
Tuesday - Sheena Na Gig' (Furey's). Good quality session, generally with professional musicians. However, can turn very stressed because the students (like myself) that usually invade the bar.
Thursday - Early's (in front of Furey's). Old fashioned session with a great ambient and nice people.
Friday - Early's too. Great session for beginners (like myself).
Sunday - Two options: Furey's and Donaghy's (the pub opposite to the Coach Station). Verona still plays there, but she had a surgery some weeks ago. I think she'll come back soon.
Hope Verona gets well soon ,she wont remember me but I wish her well . She is a grand lady in every sence of the word played in a few sessions with her over the years.
Thanks to everyone - I've just come back from the trip to Sligo and have found some really good sessions there! As I am a flute player, I was more than happy to get to Gurteen and play with Peter Horan - he's such a nice man, and very encouraging! Fowley's, Donaghy's and McGarrigles had great sessions; Furey's is closed at the moment, looks as if the place was being renovated.
