Can anyone recommend free webspace for ITM sound files?
Can anyone recommend free webspace for ITM sound files?
I get asked often to play a tune slowly so that someone has heard at our session so they can tape it. I thought it might be easier to just post some of our regular tunes on the net. for easy access. What are best music sharing sites where you can upload or MP3 files of slow versions of tunes? I know you can get midi files from here and other sources, I personally like to hear it from a real instrument.
Re: Can anyone recommend free webspace for ITM sound files?
Why don't you use an e-mail account like Gmail or Hotmail? Create a new account, log in, send the sound files as attachments in e-mails to the same account; i.e. send them to yourself. Then give your friends the login details. Easy to do and secure.
Re: Can anyone recommend free webspace for ITM sound files?
You might want to investigate setting up your own yahoo group. Then you could upload whatever you want and people could register to be part of your group. I belong to several, but have never set one up.
Re: Can anyone recommend free webspace for ITM sound files?
Or youtube. If you are nervous about your appearance (or don't have a suitable camera) you can make a movie with nothing more sophisticated than the Windows moviemaker, showing just stills for the actual video. You could show inspiring pictures of Irish moors, the dots for the tune, or slogans like "Impeach Bush now!" - wherever your imagination takes you.
Re: Can anyone recommend free webspace for ITM sound files?
I'd recommend Gmail as opposed to Hotmail, for several reasons like being spam-free, easy to use, and - most important for audio purposes - giving the user a whopping 2831MB (2,7GB) for emails.
I already use Gmail, and as an experiment it took me less than 5 minutes a few minutes ago to set up a new account - whether I'll ever use it for audio files remains to be seen.
Re: Can anyone recommend free webspace for ITM sound files?
To put meaning into the 2831MB provided by Google, 1 minute of mp3 at 128kbps (near-CD quality) will take up about 1MB - so in theory one could get about 47 hours worth of mp3s onto a Gmail account. It would take quite a while to fill up that account, though
Yes, I think I would share access to any mp3s I would make myself and send to that Gmail address, but such access would obviously be restricted to members. I believe the way to do this is for the person with the Gmail account to announce on the Discussion Forum that mp3s are available and interested members would have to contact him/her via TheSession's internal mailing system for instructions on accessing the Gmail account.
I don't think it would be at all a good idea to use a system such as I have described for sharing commercial mp3s - all sorts of nasty legal situations could arise.
And all credit to Conàn for his great idea, which has sparked all this off.
Re: Can anyone recommend free webspace for ITM sound files?
I recently set up an EzFolk account, which seemed like a real godsend. It has automatic features like artist bio / blog / photographs / player & streaming facility for mp3s in both high and lo fidelity formats. And a massive amount of storage, all free.
Then they went and changed the look of the site and I can't figure it out at all I find the site impossible to navigate and extremely annoying now.
Re: Can anyone recommend free webspace for ITM sound files?
I never thought of storing my files on an email account , which seems to be a brilliant idea, with the one drawback that there's no html for others link to.
If you google "online file storage" and search other similar keywords, there are many, many results for free file storage.
Very recently I had a photobucket account to back up my digital pictures, and I wanted my music and pictures backed up in one place (okay okay, so you caught me. I was too cheap to just up and buy a flash drive).
So I tried a few free file storage sites, offering various packages with varying size caps, all free. I eventually just bought the jump drive (4 gigs on a SanDisk Cruzer Titanium flash drive and thing is indestructible). I don't remember much about most of the proxy sites, but one sticks in my mind:
It offered a lot of features but rearranged my files by tag, title, album, artist, into its existing folders and completely scattered the collection to the point where I could hardly reckognize it and couldn't find anything. If you order your music files by title, be sure to tag them yourself with the relevant source information before uploading.
Re: Can anyone recommend free webspace for ITM sound files?
I wouldn't rely on the free Photobucket as the only backup for your photos as the uploaded pics are resized and ain't your originals any more. I don't know what happens if you upgrade to the paid account. Recently I've found Photobucket to be ridiculously slow.
Re: Can anyone recommend free webspace for ITM sound files?
I don't recall anything being resized that I didn't resize myself for one purpose or another, but I've since backed up my files on a flash drive. A much better idea of course, but you can't share it.
Re: Can anyone recommend free webspace for ITM sound files?
There is a meeting-point idea where people network in real-time in varying configurations using infinite-resolution, full-bandwidth harware interfaces with zero latency and extremely high-resolution duplex video.
Can't remember what it's called....a sess-something.
Re: Can anyone recommend free webspace for ITM sound files?
PS Yahoo sites are OK for free hosting but they put a cap on any downloads. I used one a couple of years ago, and basically after about two downloads in any one day they'd switch off the site for an hour or so - so not much use for your purposes. I guess they have to pay for all this bandwidth / storage somehow...
which will take a Gmail account and make it look like a hard drive on your computer. If you use Firefox, google "gmail space" for extensions to do the same in your browser.

I've found Soundclick very eay to use.
Sample here is a set of live recordings from a three day internet newsgroup gathering (rec.music.makers.guitar.acoustic) that I wanted to share with group members all over the world:

A real shame, since it seemed so promising.

Assuming you're using Windows, you might want to look at

which will take a Gmail account and make it look like a hard drive on your computer. If you use Firefox, google "gmail space" for extensions to do the same in your browser.

It was very easy to do and it has worked fine since I set it up a year ago.
It is even a possibility that some here might enjoy some of the performances

Re: Can anyone recommend free webspace for ITM sound files?
If you have a Google account, there's an alternative to using GMail (transferring files back and forth via e-mail could clog up people's inboxes).
Google allows account holders to create free Web pages, and you can upload files to the pages you create (I've done this before).
You can learn more at pages.google.com/ -- good luck!

Here is another example of the site:

Unfortunately my recordings aren’t very good, or of good quality (most were recorded with my sisters camera) but you can get the idea.
