I love this - posted it on The Road West album comments in the recordings section. I requested the dots (not sure why - it is far beyond the range of the whistle and I am not about to play the melody of it on the guitar but I would still like the dots.
I would come through to Bells though for a session if you were to play it Llig!! - All the way from Dundee.
Brief description - Tune: The Road West by Mairtin O Connor on his album "The Road West" and the theme tune for Geantrai. It is being performed by Mairtin, Cathal Hayden and Seamie O'Dowd and is outstanding - unashamedly cheery with every note going squeezed in!!
Seamus O'Dowd amazes me - there he is, strumming away, fairly brilliantly ... AND ... he is a *stunningly* good fiddle player ... AND a lovely bloke ...
Damn him to hell. People like him and Anna Massie have no right to exist - they make us all look bad with their incredible talent and nice personalities. Why can't they be untalented grumps like the rest of us!!
Can you tell me again, why you don't like Irish Ballad singing?
*Ding Dong Denny O'Reilly* - "Ireland's greatest ballad singer. More Dub than the Dubliners, more furious than the Fureys and the man who put the lad back into ballad."
"An audience with Podge + Rodge": http://youtube.com/watch?v=CX_uS7PaQ2M
I would say you're in a minority. Those lads are amazing. Heard them in Camden in November and many times over the years. Never been less than blown away. Of course being this good obviously precludes them from playing real "traditional" music. I think they would struggle.... young upstarts.
Tootler, I'm with you. I know they're more talented than I will be in two lifetimes, but those jazz chords bug me. Jazz and Irish music just don't mix. Any more than jazz mixes with American bluegrass. I wonder if that makes me a purist.
I'll jump on the wagon with those who agree that the tune itself is awful. I could do without the jazz riffs. It sounds odd on accordion and fiddle. Yeah, the players are excellent, but being good doesn't stop you from playing inherently naff tunes.
Anyone who doubts for one minute that these guys can play mighty trad, just needs to watch that video on my 2nd link above, right to the end! Mighty shtuff altogether!
Wonder if Mártín would have any problems with "someone" posting Gentraí reels 1 & 2 in the ABC section? Additionally I promise to post 10 traditional tunes, composer unknown, just as soon as I can find some good ones that haven't yet been posted. We'll run out soon...
That may be true Hi Ho Silver, & of course not everybody is obliged to like every tune ever written, but all I'm saying is that it certainly does give them the street cred. to play whatever the feck they like, cause you can be sure of one thing - whatever they play, they'll make a feckin great job of it!
Oh well I'll bet they're not worried. In my opinion it's great music. Hayden and OConnor have nothing to prove now; they've played great trad music for decades and are in the fortunate postion of being able to play what they like, regardless of what less talented begrudgers might say.
Conan, that was cold! Less talented begrudgers, hmmpf!
I think it's a matter of taste, what the musician chooses to play. We can separate the talent of the musician from the quality of the actual product. Usually one equals the other, but not always And the first is a measurable fact, while the second is a subjective opinion.
Interesting take on subjectivity/objectivity there kennedy. Talent - whether or not it exists or is merely an excecise in graft - is a very complicated subject, and worthy of many a discussion here. Quality, however, is quality, whether you like it or not.
Okay, I used the wrong word, I shouldn't have said quality, maybe I meant likeability or something. Of course the tune is well-played. The jazz chords just bother me, that's all. Sorry for the confusion.
