The best ITM concert you didn't get to go to?

The best ITM concert you didn't get to go to?

Well tonight is a special night that I'm kindda celebrating, though I'm not there, so ..... as I am typing this I can picture what might be happening the 1,500 odd kilometres down south in the Trinity Sessions in Adelaide. Kevin Burke and Jed Foley are there giving a concert as "I post" I recon. Can just picture the craic! Hear some wildly beautiful music going down. I'll bet the Trinity Church is fairly hopping. So here am I the 1,500 odd kilometres up the road, but down in Adelaide in spirit. Can feel that they are having a great one.

What's the best ITM concert you didn't get to go to?

Re: The best ITM concert you didn't get to go to?

Sorry you missed that one, Jan- you're definitely going to have to get your pilot's licence :) 'Best concert I didn't get to' could be set in the future. Altan are playing just down the road at Sidmouth this summer- but, as I haven't yet worked out how to get tickets (if anyone knows how to book individual gigs on the Sidmouth website I'd be grateful), I may be back on this thread in 4 months to tell you I didn't make it! :-(

Re: The best ITM concert you didn't get to go to?

Okay Strathfoyle, the hat is yours. Does it have a D on it, by any chance? Fancy missing a concert you posted and could actually go to. Durgh!

Re: The best ITM concert you didn't get to go to?

Thanks P-K. Cross post. A pilot's licence. Never thought of that one. That would surely be in keeping with the outback pioneering spirit thingy on which this town was built. Flying Doctor / air mail runs / helicopter mustering. No, actually to begin with it was camels. A little two seater Piper Cherokee would be a tidy investment when I make my first million.

I hope you get to see Altan. That is one concert (not around here, of course) that I DIDN'T get to miss!!!

Re: The best ITM concert you didn't get to go to?

Yep clear drops. a big D for dumbass too :-) I was so looking fwd to meeting up with Ciaran Tourish. Ciaran Curran after all these years, that's married life for ye :-) It would have been nice to meet Daithi Sproule for the first time too, I'm great friends with his brother Andy, fellow Derrymen.

Re: The best ITM concert you didn't get to go to?

Sorry for name dropping, Ciaran Curran was a uni buddy at Coleraine, Ciaran Tourish a neighbour from Buncrana.

Re: The best ITM concert you didn't get to go to?

That's okay Strathfoyle, their your buddies - definitely not to be missed. But where exactly is Tampa? and are you an exile of Erin?

Clear Drops, Tampa's in Florida, USA, I've been living here four years now. I'm missing the old sod recently, see my "Exiles" post. Where you at ?

Re: The best ITM concert you didn't get to go to?

Don't even get me started, you have no idea how many concerts I miss because I have no way to get there. Over the past weekend I missed three and I will miss another one on Thursday. I would have gone to all of these if I had a way to get there. Last Saturday in Troy, NY there was Martin Hayes and Denis Cahill, on Sunday there was Flook with Michael McGoldrick in NYC, on Monday there was Dervish also in NYC, and this Thursday there will be Teada and Danu in Albany. I don't go to these concerts because I go to school in the middle of nowhere and have no car. I haven't even been to a fecking session in three months.

Re: The best ITM concert you didn't get to go to?

These are all imaginary, probably, but I would have loved to be there:

Christmas at the MacDermott Roe family hall (1693).

Police Headquarters Saint Patrick’s Day party in Chicago (1904).

Michael Coleman’s American Wake in Killavil (1914).

Missed em all. Blast.

Re: The best ITM concert you didn't get to go to?

Strathfoyle,
I am in Central Oz, Alice Springs to be exact. Noone comes here unless heavily subsidised. In the last four years we have had Celtic Reign, Sirocco (who finished their concert with a stirring Irish bracket) and Fiddlers' Fest (who do a fantatic eclectic mix). Bought all their CDs. Went to them in the venue across the road (a very short walk). Isn't an Irish Traditional session within cooeeeeee, so have only been to three of those in that time too. One in Adelaide at the Daniel O'Donnell, one at The Quiet Man in Melbourne and the one I organised meself when some lovely thesession.orgers from Melbourne and the Fiddlers Fest were in town. Went looking in Darwin once when I was there fer work, but the sess listed here wasn't anymore and I couldn't find one that was.

Finding a way to get there is a prob Unseen 122, I comiserate with ya. That's hard tack. And fidkid, argh 221 years! I think you take the cake. But now Strathfoyle is homesick. What have I done?

Re: The best ITM concert you didn't get to go to?

Don't know about that - although I did miss Salsa Celtica last week (and again last night) - not ITM I know but it would have been good.

Altan are playing in Perth fairly soon too with Session A9 - I must make sure I don't miss that. Both bands are great.

BTW I was at Altan's 21st (?) birthday gig in Celtic Connections a year and a bit ago. It also featured Mary Black and Paul Brady. That was a good gig - that could have only been made better by there being more Paul Brady in it than there was. I still need to see him in concert properly.

And Solas Reunion at Celtic Connections this year - another cracking gig.

All in all I can't complain too much.

Re: The best ITM concert you didn't get to go to?

My in-laws live two miles from Sidmouth and they're trying to get tickets for Altan for my birthday. They did the same thing in 2003 and what a bloody gig that was (despite those over-loud morons Spiers and Boden wasting the first half-hour of the gig!). I love all their CDs to bits, though they sound positively restrained next to the live performances.

Re: The best ITM concert you didn't get to go to?

I had front row tickets to Altan recently, and I was so so so looking forward to it since I hadn't seen them in years.

Then I ate at a bad restaurant and couldn't go to the show. I'm not bitter.

Re: The best ITM concert you didn't get to go to?

Oh you poor thing winterowl. Front row tickets, that was quite a miss. And, yes, nothing beats the live performance Steve (if one can get it).

Anyone here get to the said Trinity Session in Adelaide South Australia, who could tell me what I missed? There must be someone on the auld yella board who went to the Kevin Burke and Jed Foley concert (or one of the other ones so far in Oz).

Re: The best ITM concert you didn't get to go to?

I don't know what it was, I missed it !
Back in '78 or '79, SO and I drove back from Yorkshire to be present at the ( first ) Planxty reunion concert, and somehow the band's heart wasn't in it and the audience had too many drunks. Funnily enough the first half was Sean Cannon on his own, and he had the audience in the palm of his hand.
The moral of my story is, you don't know it was the best, but it's a sort of reverse sour grapes; you weren't there so it must have been good. Well, not always.

Well, fair enough, Guernsey Pete, but it would be nice to know.

Re: The best ITM concert you didn't get to go to?

Well, a couple of months ago Phantom Button mentioned a Frankie Gavin gig in San Francisco that I hadn't heard about. I sent PB an e-mail asking where I could find out in advance about such appearances. But he didn't reply. :-(

Cheers,
Michael

Re: The best ITM concert you didn't get to go to?

hmmm....i, TOO, recently sent pb an email and received no reply. somehow i just don't see pb as being that garbo-esque. perhaps it is a glitch of some kind out there on the info hi-way....

Re: The best ITM concert you didn't get to go to?

oh, amd michaeir---as for advance notice of sf itm performances, one way is to head for google and type in these words: "plough stars san francisco." that will give you a link to the calendar for the plough, which is sf's last and mighty bastion for itm musicians. the page always has a month, sometimes two, with appearances skedded.
