trying to find this tune

trying to find this tune

Think it's from Shetland and it's called something like "sputerscary" or "spooterscary" or something.

Anyone know what i'm talking about?

Re: trying to find this tune

It's called Spood to Skerry I think. I've got a copy of it somewhere and I play it with a friend who plays the fiddle. I think I found it on a fiddle site somwhere. I don't know how to do the abc otherwise I would post it and I don't know how to write the dots down sorry. I think if you search for shetland fiddle tunes on the web or fiddle tunes that's how I found it. It's a few years ago now and I can't remember what the site's name is. I do like the tune. Wish I could be of more help.Good luck!

Re: trying to find this tune

The name Spoot o' Skerry or Spootiskerry has me thinking... I think up in Shetland a "spoot" ("spout") is where seawater surges from time to time up a narrow funnel among rocks, or even a little inland, and sometimes shoots up in a noteworthy or spectacular manner.

If there is an actual place in Shetland called Spootiskerry, I don't know where it is. Spouts and skerries (offshore rocks) are not uncommon. But I first learned the tune as The Fitful Head, which is a particular high promontory at the south end of Shetland's Mainland.

Please see the comments section of this tune. SPeak's description says it all. I miss him, what a wealth of knowledge he was.

Re: trying to find this tune

I think you mean Da Slockit Light - it's in the Tunes database here. It's a regular 4/4 tune, played slowly. From Shetland; great tune!

Re: trying to find this tune

Actually, someone has entered in Tunes that a "spoot" is Shetland for a razor clam (a kind of shellfish).
