Re: Transfer all those old session tapes to your computer
That's basically what I do,but I use FreeHI-Q recorder which saves the tracks as mp3s (saves a lot of space) and then I clean them up with Steinberg Wave Lab.
Re: Transfer all those old session tapes to your computer
If you can get hold of the Waves restoration software, you can get some staggering results. You strip away the layers of noise a frequency at a time. It's painstaking & you need to read the manual but worth it. It's also worth getting pitch/speed correction as well, many old cassettes can be up to a semitone out. I've had the pleasure of restoring kitchen/session recordings of Paddy Canny, Packie Duignan, Paddy Cronin & Sean Ryan recently. Treasures. I'd post something but don't know how!
Re: Transfer all those old session tapes to your computer
Audacity (free, http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ ) has a simple noise removal feature. You just select a "blank" spot (with hiss or background hum, whatever) so it can analyze what to remove, then click a button. Maybe not as sophisticated as the other software mentioned, but not bad, and easy as pie.

This is the way my father does it, with decent results (considering some of the tapes are pretty ratty).

So all my tapes of the Celtic Sojourn radio program can live on in another form--kind of an electronic afterlife!
Thanks, Tracie!
