Re your question on whether it's like Willie Clancy, I haven't been there myself but from talking with friends who have, they say it's similar but a scaled down version. Some say it's like the Willie Clancy Weeks in the earlier years before too many people got to know about it. Having said that, all the reports I've heard were positive.
It is much the same set-up as Milltown, but on a much smaller scale. It has a more intimate atmosphere, I feel. The first few days can be fairly quiet, but owing to the relatively small number of pubs, the sessions tend to get very crowded at the weekend.
Just between you and me, Tommy, it's well worth the trip. But don't tell anyone else - we don't want *everyone* turning up.
Just had to reply to this post. I started going to Joe Mooney Summer School 15 years ago and now live and work in Leitrim, thats how good it is! Drumshanbo is a wonderful friendly town and the summer school is excellent with very high calibre tutors e.g. Noel Hill, Joe Burke, Michael Tubridy to mention just a few. Atmosphere all week is great. Earlier years were quiet but recently it has gotten very busy (preferred the earlier years myself) but in Drumshanbo all musicians are always welcome, there are no paid gigs or session trails and this makes it a wonderful venue for musicians to just play music. Highlights of the week are the Bar-B-Q on the shores of lough Allen, dead musicians tour (tour to resting places of McKenna, Duignan, Josie McDermott etc.) and the concert.
But its the atmosphere and the people of Drumshanbo who make this festival an out and out winner.
